After the Monaco F1 GP, Scuderia Ferrari is seen as favorite to take the race win also in the Canadian Grand Prix and Helmut Marko is worried. The Austrian analyzed the Monaco weekend in a recent interview for Speedweek, highlighting the issues that slowed Red Bull’s work. As already emerged, the main problem lies in the lack of correlation between the simulator and the track, which does not allow a linear approach to on-track work.
Red Bull leaves Monte Carlo with several problems. The Monaco weekend was a disaster for the Austrians, with the devastating retirement of Sergio Perez—note the cost of the damage to his RB20—and the dull sixth place of Max Verstappen. The Dutch champion, who had secured an impressive pole position just a year ago, finished far from the podium after a qualifying error.
“We had a lot of problems on the curbs,” explains Helmut Marko. “The car adapted relatively well for qualifying, and we could assume that Max would be on the front row. But obviously, when you have such a nervous car, even a driver like Max can make a mistake. He tried to maximize the first sector, where he was faster than the Ferrari cars, and limit the damage in the others.” – the Austrian pointed out.
“The problem arises from the simulator, which indicated a smoother behavior of the car on the curbs,” continues the Austrian. “In simple terms, this means there is no correlation between the simulator and the track. And Monaco was not the first circuit where we had this problem. This is the first point we will address.” – he added.

Looking ahead to the Canadian Grand Prix, while there is cautious optimism at Ferrari, Helmut Marko foresees further difficulties: “We are optimistic that we will at least discover why the simulator produces data that does not match reality. But Montreal could also be a difficult weekend for us and Ferrari could once again be fast.” – the Red Bull consultant concluded.
