The official confirmation of Mattia Binotto’s resignation as Ferrari team principal, which arrived after two weeks of rumours and speculation in the media and beyond, has left more than a veil of uncertainty about what the future of the Prancing Horse team will be in 2023.
The new boss of the Maranello team will only be named at the beginning of the new year, when Mattia Binotto’s duties will officially end, and in the meantime the discussions are ongoing to identify the ideal replacement. There seems to be a favorite and it would be the French, Alfa Romeo team principal, Frederic Vasseur. However, his name, which was reported by the media long before the official statement announcing Mattia Binotto’s departure, is not at all certain. This led to several other possibilities, which are currently less considered.
For a long time there has been talk of external options who, however, would not have liked the move to Maranello – this is the case of the various Seidl and Horner – or of former men already seen at work in Ferrari who, however, seem to have cordially declined the invitation: Ross Brawn and Jean Todt above all. The ‘internal solution’ has been less considered so far: Laurent Mekies, current director and Mattia Binotto’s right hand man, doesn’t seem to be a name that convinces the Ferrari senior management. On the other hand Antonello Coletta, manager of GT sports activities at Ferrari, is highly appreciated it but is currently focused on the eagerly awaited debut of the Prancing Horse in the Hypercar category.
Yet, even according to various external observers, the direction of an internal substitute could be the most likely one. Helmut Marko, historic Red Bull consultant, also pointed out to this possibility, speaking to the ‘corporate’ channel Servus TV and trying to anticipate what is happening within the Maranello team.

“I can imagine that Ferrari will entrust the job to one of their men“, Marko said.
However, it seems difficult at the moment to identify, if this were really the case, which profile would be selected.
