A violent storm hit Interlagos shortly before the start of qualifying. This isn’t a new situation in Brazil and might lead to qualifying being postponed to Sunday morning (as has happened before, most recently at Suzuka in 2019). The main issue is that the forecast for tomorrow doesn’t look promising, with similar conditions expected.
Under “normal” circumstances, if qualifying couldn’t be held, the grid would be determined by the last session completed. However, the Sprint format this weekend complicates things. The regulations treat qualifying and the Sprint race as separate events, so these sessions can’t be used to determine the Grand Prix starting grid.
As a result, the last and only practice session held, FP1, would be used, as confirmed by the timing monitors that have already loaded Friday morning’s standings while waiting for further updates on track conditions.
If it turns out that qualifying can’t be held even on Sunday morning, the starting grid would astonishingly be as follows.
