Fred Vasseur sides with the Ferrari team after the heated radio exchanges between Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton during the Miami GP. The Ferrari team principal spoke to SkySportF1 at the end of the race and explained what went well and what didn’t.
“It’s tough to have a race like this where being 57 seconds behind the leader is really a lot. McLaren were on another planet, they were 30 seconds ahead of everyone else. But in the end, our pace was comparable to that of Mercedes and Red Bull. I believe this car still has a lot of potential. We didn’t find a good balance all weekend, we need to keep working. Today we were far from McLaren, but we weren’t the only ones.” These were the Frenchman’s first words.
Ferrari pit wall strategy pits Charles Leclerc against Lewis Hamilton, and yet…
Then he clarified what happened on the pit wall. “The decision taken was the right one, we made a swap following the internal rules. They obeyed, they did the swap, we were the only ones to do so. That’s perfectly fine — in the end, that’s how these things are managed.”
Updates coming? “We need updates, but I don’t think that’s the only solution. We need to find the best compromise with this car. The first step will be Imola, then Barcelona, but we need to understand how to bring everything together. We could have a better Ferrari, the characteristics might suit us.” – the French manager pointed out.
He then ended decisively: “The problem was simply in tyre management. I don’t think it’s only down to the car. We don’t understand how to manage the tyres, but once we figure that out, things will be very different.” – Fred Vasseur concluded at the end of the Miami Grand Prix.
