Last Sunday afternoon, while competing in the Italian Grand Prix, Kevin Magnussen was involved in an incident at turn 4 of the Monza circuit. As he approached the Roggia chicane, the Dane made contact with Pierre Gasly. After careful analysis by the race stewards, it was decided to give him a ten-second penalty, along with two points on his driver’s license.
While the time penalty ruined the Italian GP for the Haas driver, the points on his license brought him to the maximum limit of 12 points within a year, automatically disqualifying him from the next Grand Prix, which is set to take place at the Baku City Circuit.
As reported in the official FIA document: “Under Article 4.2 of the FIA Formula 1 Sporting Regulations, since the driver of car number 20 has accumulated 12 penalty points, his Super License is suspended for the next competition.” Below is the document from the Federation.
Yesterday morning, with a clear mind, Kevin Magnussen posted some snapshots of his Italian weekend on Instagram stories, and in one of the photos, he also expressed his opinion regarding the penalty he received. These were his comments: “I’m happy with our race, but I disagree with the penalty. I had slight contact with Pierre Gasly at turn 4, and we both went off track, not completing the turn, but neither car was damaged, and there were no consequences. We were racing.”
Despite the Dane’s disappointment, unless Haas appeals the decision, Kevin Magnussen will not be on the starting grid for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, which will take place in two weeks. In his place, we might see Ferrari Driver Academy member Oliver Bearman, who will be in Baku that weekend to compete in the penultimate round of Formula 2. However, if the call comes from the F1 team, as it did in Jeddah, the Ferrari junior won’t hesitate for a second and will get in the car to race his second Formula 1 Grand Prix of his career.
