Günther Steiner, former HAAS team principal, spoke on The Red Flags Podcast. During the episode, where he addressed various topics – from Max Verstappen’s penalty to the title fight – Gunther Steiner also focused on Hamilton’s situation at Ferrari. His statements caused some agitation among the fans of the Red team.
Lewis Hamilton’s start to the season at Ferrari has not been very easy. Between ups and downs, the first five races showed a Hamilton in difficulty, especially when compared directly to his teammate Charles Leclerc. The driver’s own statements at the end of the Saudi Arabian GP confirmed this impression.
Is the situation at Ferrari worrying?
Günther Steiner did not hide his concern about the situation at Ferrari. The former HAAS team principal said on The Red Flags podcast: “The speed difference between Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton is slowly becoming a concern.”
Steiner added: “I am much more concerned about what he thinks when he asks where he is losing time. The engineer can tell you where you are losing time but certainly cannot make you understand why you are losing it, that depends on you.” Several times, during qualifying and the race, Lewis Hamilton asked his race engineer Riccardo Adami for this information. “The worst thing could be if Lewis [Hamilton] lost his confidence, because then it would be a downhill spiral. It is a concern,” Günther Steiner continued.
The former team principal then concluded: “Obviously, they will work on it and Lewis will be the first to do so. I have no idea how they will get out of it.”
