After the Imola Grand Prix qualifying, Scuderia Ferrari can smile a bit. The starting grid ahead of Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz will be less crowded than expected. The stewards have issued a penalty to McLaren driver Oscar Piastri: the Australian will serve the penalty on the Sunday starting grid for tomorrow’s Emilia Romagna Grand Prix.
The penalty for Oscar Piastri will be three positions on the starting grid. The stewards’ decision came during the post-qualifying period in Imola, based on what happened in Q1. The McLaren driver will start from fifth position instead of second. Lando Norris, Charles Leclerc, and Carlos Sainz each move up one place. Both Ferrari cars are in the second row.
Penalty for Oscar Piastri: what happened in Imola qualifying?
Just moments before the end of the first qualifying round, the Australian driver was involved in a clear impeding incident against Kevin Magnussen. At that moment, the 19th-placed Haas driver had just started his flying lap aiming to reach Q2.
Ready, go: Kevin Magnussen had to abort the lap immediately. At the Tamburello chicane, the obstacle for #20 was the papaya-colored McLaren of Oscar Piastri.
Waving the white flag, the Haas driver vehemently addressed the pit wall: “I can’t believe it! It’s surreal, surreal, damn it!” exclaimed Kevin Magnussen, agitated in the cockpit.
