According to German automobile magazine ‘Auto Motor und Sport’, the GPS data from the second free practice session for the 2022 Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix at the Albert Park Circuit in Melbourne reveals that Scuderia Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc entered the second sector of the track with one and a half tenths ahead of his Red Bull rival Max Verstappen but exits it two and a half tenths behind. However, the Ferrari driver is able to take four tenths off Max Verstappen in the slow left-hand corner before the pit entry, because in the final corner Charles Leclerc can stay on the throttle while the Red Bull driver has to lift.
Scuderia Ferrari boss Mattia Binotto comments and impressions at the end of FP1 and FP2 for the 2022 Australian Grand Prix: “I see the same picture as in the first two races. Red Bull are good on the straights, we are good in the corners. Friday doesn’t tell much. We don’t know who has more engine power in reserve and how much Red Bull will benefit when there is more grip on the track.” – he added.
There was hardly a car that bounced more on the straights than the Ferrari F1-75, but despite that, Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz were still fastest. The competition was surprised and admit “they [Ferrari] don’t seem to mind the bouncing.” Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko explained that “in the first practice session we tried something that worked in the simulator, but not on the track. When we changed back to the old setup with more downforce, it got better. We still lack some traction in the slow corners. But despite that we kept up with Charles in the long runs”.
