A rare glimpse of Schumacher’s lighter side
Time passes, but love remains intact: two days ago, the Formula 1 world celebrated Michael Schumacher’s 57th birthday. Social media were filled with tributes, photos, videos, and memories of an icon who left his mark not only on motorsport but also in the hearts of many. For Italians, the early 2000s are remembered as Sundays on the couch, cheering for a nearly untouchable Ferrari.
Paying homage to the German champion, journalist Giorgio Terruzzi shared a special episode of his podcast, revisiting both sporting and personal stories of the legendary driver. Among the anecdotes, Giorgio Terruzzi recalled a charming and humorous encounter with Schumacher before he arrived at Maranello: “At Estoril, we organized a dinner where Michael Schumacher attended. I was sitting a bit crooked, and being cross-eyed, it’s never clear where I’m looking. I had asked the person next to Michael a question, but he answered instead. I told him I wasn’t speaking to him, but not to worry. And he said, ‘But it’s nice that someone like you can joke about a problem.’ I added, ‘Look, I cry for hours every night,’ and he, blushing like crazy, started eating his pasta, thinking he had caused some damage. I later explained that it was all nonsense.”
This warm episode contrasts sharply with the cold silence that fell over Schumacher after his terrible accident in Méribel. For more than a decade, the family has carefully controlled the flow of information from their Swiss home, also trying to counteract the unnecessary exploitation around the former driver. In this difficult time, the only way to show solidarity is to respect the privacy requested by those closest to him, remembering the champion for who he was and for what he left in the hearts of the fans.
As fans continue to honor Michael Schumacher’s 57th birthday, stories like Giorgio Terruzzi’s serve as a reminder of the champion’s hidden warmth and humanity, providing a stark contrast to the strictly guarded privacy of his current life.
