In his usual podcast, Italian journalist Giorgio Terruzzi has put forward the hypothesis that Ferrari could perform well on the streets of Monte Carlo in the Monaco Grand Prix weekend, despite predictions favoring Red Bull and Fernando Alonso’s Aston Martin. The reasons lie in the fact that the streets of the Principality create a track with unique characteristics, where technical differences fade away.
Firstly, the Italian journalist emphasized the setback in developments that the Scuderia could experience due to the cancellation of the Imola Grand Prix: “Ferrari was supposed to bring an upgrade package to Imola, but a significant portion of those updates are not useful or testable in Monte Carlo. The problem is that in Spain, a much more concrete and significant wave of interventions on the car was planned, which would have also been supported by the tests in Imola. So, the canceled Grand Prix risks complicating things a bit. However, this doesn’t mean that the Ferrari we know, not the modified one, cannot make a good impression in Monte Carlo, because there, a series of typical complications present in other tracks disappear.” – Giorgio Terruzzi explained.
Despite not being an excellent car, the SF-23 still has characteristics that can make it competitive in Monaco: “We must consider the strengths and weaknesses of Ferrari: unlike Red Bull, the Red car quickly gets the tires up to temperature. And this can help them in qualifying. Charles Leclerc always manages to produce a great flying lap, and I believe Max Verstappen is not yet at his level when it comes to being a pole position man,” said Giorgio Terruzzi.
“Then, once you’re in front… overtaking… But first, you start ahead. If you start third, there’s always the unknown factor, the battle with the second-place driver, the guardrail, the risk of spinning, and so on. Charles Leclerc actually has a chance in Monte Carlo. We’ll have to see if the Red Bull’s quality can be beaten by the Monegasque in qualifying, even with a stunning lap. However, the tire compounds are similar to those in Azerbaijan, where he took pole position, and now we have another street circuit,” Giorgio Terruzzi concluded ahead of the 2023 Formula 1 Monaco Grand Prix.
