Dutch former racing driver, Giedo van der Garde, who last competed in the 2023 IMSA SportsCar Championship for TDS Racing, believes that Ferrari should designate Charles Leclerc as the “number 1” within the team.
Ferrari team principal Frederic Vasseur has repeatedly stated that Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz receive equal treatment within the team, emphasizing that there is no “number 1” within the Maranello team.
However, some argue that Charles Leclerc is superior to Carlos Sainz and should, therefore, receive more support within the Italian side. Former Formula 1 driver Guido van der Garde also stated that the Monegasque driver should be an explicit “number 1” within the team due to being better than teammate Carlos Sainz.
According to Racingnews365, Giedo Van der Garde said: “I think this will happen. I think it’s very important for Fred Vasseur to announce that Charles Leclerc is the number one within the team.” – he pointed out. – “Last season, Ferrari took a few steps forward. They improved their strategy and pit stops. Although the situation will be completely different in 2022, the car became as fast as a rocket on the straights.” – the former Formula 1 driver continued.

“The only question is what kind of car Ferrari will have next year. When they produce a car that can compete for victories and championships, Charles will make Max Verstappen’s life difficult. I think he can extract everything from a fast car. Charles Leclerc is very good in qualifying; faster than Carlos Sainz.” – the Dutch former racing driver concluded.
