During the long interview for the Italian daily newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport on the occasion of his 50th birthday, professional racing driver Giancarlo Fisichella opened up on several topics, also focusing on his experience in Formula 1, his arrival at Ferrari in 2009 and the Maranello team current line-up. Below you can find an extract of his words.
When asked how difficult it is to reconcile his work with the role of husband and father, Giancarlo Fisichella explained: “I was lucky to have the right partner and family, my point of reference. I tried to teach values and education, making it clear that you go ahead with the commitment. Will we see a junior Fisichella on the track? My son Christopher turns twenty in a month. I’m sorry I didn’t follow him more closely, making him compete, because the few times he got on a kart or in a car, he impressed. Who knows if something will happen now”.
On his career in Formula 1 and beyond…
“I’m happy, I wouldn’t go back to change something. I raced for 14 seasons in Formula 1, competed in 231 GPs, with poles and victories, contributing to Renault’s conquest of two constructors’ titles. Of course, I would have liked to win the drivers’ championship, but you can’t have everything. Do I regret having arrived at Ferrari only in 2009? It’s true, I arrived late, competing in only five races with a car that was difficult to drive and without testing, but racing for Ferrari was a secret dream of mine ever since as a child and at the age of 37 I couldn’t say no. Since then I have remained in the family until now as a driver in the GT Competition department”.
Comparing Formula 1 periods
“What did F1 have back in its day that is missing today? The incomparable sound of the V8 or V10 engines. I wouldn’t trade that with today’s cars, even if the races are beautiful and spectacular, with interesting innovations such as the Sprints Race. Stefano Domenicali is doing a great job”.

On Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz
“Is the current Ferrari line-up the best one in Formula One? The strongest or among the strongest. Both have the qualities to become world champions”.
