Gerhard Berger warns of key challenge awaiting Lewis Hamilton in his first year with Ferrari. Gerhard Berger predicts Lewis Hamilton to face one major ‘struggle’ during his first F1 season at Ferrari.

Hamilton’s Legacy in F1 and the Challenges Ahead at Ferrari

From the moment Lewis Hamilton burst onto the Formula 1 scene with his spectacular rookie season at McLaren in 2007, he has remained at the heart of the sport. That year, he and teammate Fernando Alonso came agonizingly close to clinching the championship, only to see Kimi Räikkönen snatch the title in a dramatic season finale.

A year later, Hamilton secured his first world title in breathtaking fashion, and from that point onward, it was never a matter of if but when he would rewrite the record books. Over the years, he has amassed more race wins, pole positions, fastest laps, and podiums than any driver in F1 history.

Yet, two significant milestones still elude him—records that he would undoubtedly love to claim during his time at Ferrari. The first is surpassing Michael Schumacher’s seven world championships, a feat that would carry extra weight given Schumacher’s legendary status at the Scuderia. The second, however, is entirely beyond his control. To become the driver with the most Grand Prix starts, Lewis Hamilton must wait for Fernando Alonso’s eventual retirement, as the Spaniard currently holds that distinction.

Though his Ferrari tenure has only just begun, Lewis Hamilton has already broken one record—previously held by his new teammate, Charles Leclerc.

Ahead of the 2025 Formula 1 season and Lewis Hamilton’s much-anticipated debut in red, former Ferrari driver Gerhard Berger shared his thoughts with Auto Motor und Sport. While the former Formula 1 driver sees the switch to Maranello as a revitalizing move for Lewis Hamilton’s career, he also believes Charles Leclerc’s presence could pose a significant challenge in his pursuit of an eighth title.

Gerhard Berger Foresees Leclerc as a Major Obstacle for Hamilton at Ferrari

Gerhard Berger was asked about Hamilton’s prospects at Ferrari for the upcoming season and suggested that the move could provide the fresh motivation the seven-time champion needs. He pointed out that Hamilton had faced two major challenges in recent years—Mercedes had only been competitive on rare occasions, and spending so long with the same team had left him in need of a change of environment.

Gerhard Berger noted that finishing in fifth place was unlikely to inspire Hamilton, but he believed the Briton would need to push himself harder at Ferrari, which could bring out his best once again. However, he also predicted that Hamilton might struggle against Charles Leclerc’s raw speed, expecting a closely contested battle between the two.

When asked whether he believed Lewis Hamilton and Ferrari would be a successful pairing, Berger expressed confidence that they would work well together. He added that if the British driver were to win a world championship with Ferrari, it would be one of the most significant moments in Formula 1 history from a marketing perspective.

Although Hamilton’s marketability is undeniable, Ferrari’s decision to sign him was driven by far more than just commercial appeal.

One of the key challenges he may face is Charles Leclerc’s exceptional one-lap pace, which has made him one of the most formidable qualifiers on the grid. If Hamilton can match or surpass Leclerc in that area, his chances of contending for the championship will be significantly strengthened.

Gerhard Berger Offers Bold Forecast for Ferrari’s 2025 Constructors’ Title Hopes

When asked about his prediction for the 2025 Constructors’ Championship, Gerhard Berger stated that he would place his bet on Ferrari. While he could not say for certain whether Hamilton or Leclerc would secure the drivers’ or constructors’ title, he was confident that the team would claim at least one championship by the end of the season.

Gerhard Berger pointed out that Ferrari had shown strong pace throughout the previous year, despite occasional inconsistencies. He expressed trust in Fred Vasseur’s ability to eliminate those fluctuations, acknowledging that while it had taken time, the team now appeared to be on the verge of achieving greater stability.

He also highlighted Ferrari’s strong position in terms of both engine and chassis development, along with the strength of their driver lineup. Gerhard Berger praised Fred Vasseur’s leadership, describing him as composed, strategic, and consistently effective—a quality he had demonstrated throughout his motorsport career.

According to Gerhard Berger, Ferrari made a wise decision in appointing Fred Vasseur, though it was always expected that his impact would take a year or two to materialize. Now, he believed the results of that work were beginning to show. He also commended Vasseur’s move to bring Hamilton on board, expressing confidence that under his guidance, Ferrari would return to the top of Formula 1.
