Gerhard Berger was not surprised by Lewis Hamilton’s move to Ferrari, with the Austrian convinced that the Mercedes driver can initiate a winning cycle like Michael Schumacher.
With 103 victories, 104 pole positions, and seven world titles, Lewis Hamilton brings an impressive track record to Ferrari, along with unparalleled experience. John Elkann’s move goes beyond the sporting aspect, with the British driver undoubtedly bringing a winning mentality to the team, something that has been lacking in Maranello for too long.
Certainly, both Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton will need to be supported by a competitive car, but everything hints at a bright future for the prancing horse. Gerhard Berger shares the same opinion and, speaking with the Italian daily newspaper La Gazzetta Dello Sport, expressed his lack of surprise at the sensational transfer: “I actually expected it earlier. It was clear that Lewis could end up at Ferrari; it’s an advantageous situation for both.”
“The team needs to open a new chapter, and Lewis is one of the best drivers in history, as well as an exceptional figure in public relations. The Ferrari brand and the Hamilton brand together form a super-attractive combination for enthusiasts.”
“Moreover, Lewis knows that winning a championship with Ferrari would have a special value for his career because it’s every driver’s dream, making him even more famous.”
Regarding the contribution Hamilton can make from 2025, Gerhard Berger responded: “Firstly, his experience. He has won more than a hundred Grand Prix races, is accustomed to winning, and thus knows how to motivate the team and handle politically challenging situations.” – he continued.

“In addition, some technicians will follow him, and others from different teams might join because they are motivated by Lewis’s presence. Ferrari can initiate a cycle of successes as it happened with Michael Schumacher.”
Relationship with Charles Leclerc
Finally, speaking about coexisting with Charles Leclerc, the Austrian does not believe that rivalry will turn into a fratricidal struggle: “Charles Leclerc can learn a lot from Lewis Hamilton. If he wants to become the best in the world, he must beat Lewis in any case, even with the same car. Charles can truly prove his worth. He hasn’t won the title yet, like Lewis and Max, but he has the speed and talent to compete with them.” – Gerhard Berger concluded.
