George Russell has warned Mercedes that its dominant start to the 2026 Formula 1 season offers no guarantee that its advantage will continue, identifying Ferrari as one of the rivals capable of changing the competitive balance with a major upgrade. Mercedes has won eight of the first 11 Grands Prix and established a substantial advantage in both championships, but the British driver believes complacency could quickly turn the team’s current success into history.
The team led by Toto Wolff began the new regulatory era with greater strength than its rivals and rapidly established itself at the top of the Formula 1 hierarchy. However, the picture has become less straightforward as the season has progressed, with Ferrari and McLaren reducing the advantage enjoyed by the Silver Arrows during the opening rounds.
George Russell sees Ferrari closing the gap to Mercedes
George Russell has taken two victories this season compared with the six achieved by team-mate Andrea Kimi Antonelli. More importantly for Mercedes, the British driver has highlighted how noticeably the competitive margin has narrowed across the most recent five Grands Prix.
During that period, Ferrari has claimed two victories and McLaren one, interrupting the run of Mercedes dominance. The Maranello team has made clear progress during the middle phase of the championship, even though Frédéric Vasseur has stressed that Ferrari’s 2026 progress is still “not enough” given the opportunities already lost.
Mercedes has also had to deal with more difficult weekends of its own. Reliability problems in particular have cost important points for both Andrea Kimi Antonelli and George Russell, forcing the team to work urgently to limit the damage while protecting its position at the head of the championship.
George Russell praises Mercedes’ resilience through difficult weekends
Despite those setbacks, George Russell has been particularly impressed by the way Mercedes has responded to the negative phases of the season. Speaking exclusively to RN365, the British driver praised the maturity and stability of the group working around him, highlighting an internal culture centred on objective data and performance.
“I have to be honest, we have an extremely resilient and focused group of people, driven by data and performance,” George Russell said. “They are quite balanced through the rollercoaster of an F1 season. What I mean is that, in the low moments, the team didn’t feel that low: it simply focused on the process of improving performance.”
That approach, according to George Russell, does not change when Mercedes is winning.
“Now, in the high moments, it remains equally focused on performance and improvement. So the mindset and approach have been similar in both defeats and successes.”
The comments underline how Mercedes has attempted to maintain the same analytical approach regardless of results. Reliability setbacks have not triggered panic, while victories have not been treated as a reason to reduce the urgency of the development programme.
Why a major Ferrari upgrade concerns George Russell
That mentality becomes particularly important during the first season of a new Formula 1 regulatory cycle. Every team is still learning about its car, while technical upgrades can produce substantial changes in the competitive order as engineers discover more effective development directions.
Ferrari remains firmly involved in that process. The Scuderia has adopted a race-by-race approach to SF-26 development, while Charles Leclerc has also urged the team to remain aggressive in the 2026 upgrade battle.
For George Russell, that is precisely why Mercedes cannot assume that its early-season superiority will automatically continue. A small number of mistakes, a poorly judged upgrade or a significant step from Ferrari could be enough to place Mercedes’ leadership under much greater pressure.
“At the moment we cannot afford to be complacent,” George Russell warned. “Today we are winning. You could be confident that this will continue for several races. But if we get the next upgrade wrong, or if Ferrari brings a big upgrade, or if one link in the chain stops working, this success can become a thing of the past, part of history.”
Mercedes cannot afford complacency in the 2026 F1 title fight
The warning is particularly relevant because Ferrari has already demonstrated that the performance gap is not fixed. The SF-26 has become more competitive during the season, while the technical picture remains highly dynamic as all of the leading teams continue learning about the new generation of Formula 1 cars. Ferrari’s recent performance has also required increasingly detailed analysis, including the factors behind the SF-26’s limitations during the Hungarian Grand Prix weekend.
George Russell believes the correct response is to maintain the same mindset regardless of whether Mercedes is experiencing success or disappointment.
“You can’t be too complacent in the good moments. You can’t be too depressed and negative in the bad moments.”
The message from the Mercedes driver is therefore straightforward. Eight victories from the opening 11 races have given the team an enviable position, but Formula 1’s development race can change rapidly. A decisive improvement from Ferrari, an unsuccessful Mercedes upgrade or a weakness anywhere within the performance chain could significantly alter the championship picture.
For George Russell, maintaining Mercedes’ advantage will depend on refusing to treat the opening half of 2026 as evidence that the job is already done. Ferrari and McLaren have already interrupted the Silver Arrows’ early dominance, and with the new regulations still offering significant development potential, Mercedes must continue improving if it wants its current position at the top to last.
