Chinese Grand Prix race report
When Giancarlo Fisichella won the Malaysian Grand Prix on March 19, 2006, Kimi Antonelli had not yet been born. Twenty years have passed since that last Italian triumph in Formula 1, and now the Italian flag finally returns to the top step of the podium thanks to the talented driver from Bologna.
Antonelli delivered a sensational performance in Shanghai, adding yet another historic achievement to his rapidly growing Formula 1 career. Only days earlier he had already made headlines by becoming the youngest pole-sitter in the history of the sport. Now he has followed that milestone with an equally impressive victory.
The young Mercedes driver controlled the race with remarkable maturity, managing the pace over the 56 laps while keeping the competition firmly behind him. His victory places him among the youngest race winners in Formula 1 history, with only Max Verstappen having won a Grand Prix at a younger age.
For Italian motorsport fans, Antonelli’s triumph represents a particularly emotional moment. Italy has a long and rich heritage in Formula 1, but victories for Italian drivers have been extremely rare in the modern era. The last time the Italian anthem was played for a driver on the podium dates back two decades, making this success even more special.
Behind Antonelli, Mercedes celebrated an outstanding team result as George Russell secured second place, completing a dominant one-two finish for the Silver Arrows. Ferrari also enjoyed a strong race, with Lewis Hamilton finishing third and Charles Leclerc just behind in fourth position after an intense battle between the two teammates.
Further down the order, Oliver Bearman delivered an impressive drive for Haas to claim fifth place, while Alpine’s Pierre Gasly finished sixth. Liam Lawson, Isack Hadjar, Carlos Sainz and Franco Colapinto completed the top ten in what proved to be a challenging and eventful race.
The Chinese Grand Prix also saw several retirements and technical issues across the grid. Max Verstappen was forced to retire due to a mechanical problem, while Aston Martin drivers Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll were also unable to reach the finish.
In addition, both McLaren drivers, Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris, were unable to start the race because of electrical problems discovered before the formation lap, while Audi’s Gabriel Bortoleto and Williams driver Alexander Albon were also listed as non-starters due to technical issues.
