Despite some disappointment, Scuderia Ferrari confirmed significant progress during qualifying at the 2025 Formula 1 British Grand Prix at Silverstone. Now, even McLaren team principal Andrea Stella expresses concern about the performance of the Ferrari SF-25. On Saturday, the SF-25 shone bright, showing clear signs of growth and competitiveness. Although Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton missed out on fighting for pole position due to a few minor errors, the overall progress is undeniable. The Ferrari car appeared well-balanced, firmly planted to the asphalt, and ready to put up a serious fight. The new rear suspension upgrade promises to deliver the final push for a strong comeback during the race.
Expectations heading into Silverstone were for Ferrari to confirm the positive signs shown in Austria, and they did just that. On British soil, Ferrari’s SF-25 demonstrated the potential that was promised before the start of the championship—a car no longer shy about its capabilities, capable of competing strongly on Saturday and maintaining a solid race pace on Sunday. While the starting grid might be tight and competitive, the SF-25 clearly contends as one of the leading cars alongside McLaren.
Andrea Stella: “Ferrari was, and still is, the car to beat”
This performance surprised even those at McLaren who might have expected an easier time this season. “Looking at the lap times Ferrari managed to set in every session, they appeared to be the strongest team, and probably still are,” stated Andrea Stella following qualifying, as reported by crash.net. “The gaps are very small, and Max Verstappen’s pole time could be attributed to better track conditions during his flying lap.”
“It’s all very close; it’s hard to say who was truly the strongest, but Ferrari definitely seemed the most competitive. In Q2, they held first and second positions convincingly. It seems that the upgrades introduced in Austria have worked very well. It will be interesting to see how they perform here at Silverstone and throughout the remainder of the championship.”
Race prospects: Ferrari versus McLaren—if the weather holds
Regarding the race itself, much will depend on the weather conditions. “It’s difficult to say which team will be best on a dry track, but Ferrari’s times in practice were impressive,” Stella continued. “They ran several laps with a heavy fuel load that we weren’t able to replicate. We thought they were favorites for both the race and qualifying.”
“The weather will be a factor,” he added. “If conditions are unstable, as we saw last year, it could make for an interesting spectacle. However, I don’t expect heavy or persistent rain.”
