Mick Schumacher keeps the door open for a potential Formula 1 return
Mick Schumacher has secured his future in IndyCar but has not ruled out a possible return to Formula 1 in the future. The former Ferrari junior and Haas driver will compete full-time in the 2026 IndyCar season, yet the 26-year-old reiterated to the media that he is not “closing the door” on F1. Mick Schumacher insists that a return to the pinnacle of motorsport is by no means impossible, even after signing a full-season contract with IndyCar for 2026.
The ex-Formula 1 driver has joined the Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing (RLL) team for the 2026 IndyCar championship, following several years as a Mercedes F1 reserve driver. In addition, he was part of Alpine’s endurance program, where he secured a podium in the 6 Hours of Imola in the World Endurance Championship (WEC).
Mick Schumacher attempted, without success, to secure a full-time Formula 1 seat with Alpine as well as with Audi. He was also strongly linked to a reserve role with Cadillac. The son of the seven-time world champion has now turned his attention to America’s premier open-wheel category.
When asked at the announcement of his IndyCar move whether the decision would affect his willingness to try returning to Formula 1 in the future, Mick Schumacher replied, “No, I think in any case the world of F1 is very specific and special, but obviously it’s still all about single-seaters.” He added, as reported by RacingNews365, “And I believe there have been many great drivers, numerous ones, who were also affiliated with other F1 teams for good reasons. So I don’t see why moving to IndyCar should close that door, no.”
The future IndyCar driver is determined to keep his hopes alive, seeking a second opportunity to fully showcase his potential, whether in the United States or potentially back in Formula 1.
For now, Mick Schumacher is an IndyCar race driver. But ask him if Formula 1 is finished with him, and the answer is a firm no.
