Charles Leclerc’s Ferrari journey could have taken a very different path
Today, Charles Leclerc is widely viewed as one of the central figures in Ferrari’s long-term Formula 1 project. The Monegasque driver has committed his future to the Scuderia through a multi-year contract extension and remains one of the most recognizable faces associated with Maranello’s pursuit of championship success.
Yet there was a period when that relationship appeared far less secure.
Despite joining Ferrari in 2019 and quickly establishing himself as one of Formula 1’s fastest drivers, Charles Leclerc spent several seasons navigating uncertainty both on and off the track. As Ferrari endured repeated championship disappointments and struggled to consistently challenge for titles, speculation linking Charles Leclerc to rival teams became increasingly frequent.
At various stages, observers questioned whether the Monegasque star would be willing to dedicate the prime years of his career to a project that had not yet delivered the success many expected.
While Charles Leclerc ultimately chose to reaffirm his commitment to Ferrari, recent comments suggest the partnership may not have survived without significant changes inside the team’s leadership structure.
The difficult years under Mattia Binotto
According to journalist Scott Mitchell-Malm, speaking on The Race F1 Podcast, the relationship between Charles Leclerc and Ferrari faced serious strain during Mattia Binotto’s tenure as team principal.
The suggestion was not that Ferrari lost faith in Charles Leclerc’s talent. Rather, the internal dynamic reportedly evolved in a way that left the driver feeling less central to the project than many expected.
Mitchell-Malm argued that Mattia Binotto appeared to place considerable value on the technical approach and working style brought by Carlos Sainz. The Spaniard earned a reputation for his detailed feedback and methodical development work, qualities that were highly appreciated within the organization.
As a result, there were periods when Ferrari’s internal balance appeared to shift away from Charles Leclerc, creating tensions that threatened the long-term stability of the partnership.
According to Mitchell-Malm’s assessment, the relationship between Charles Leclerc and Ferrari only narrowly survived that phase. He suggested that without the leadership changes that followed, the Monegasque driver might no longer be part of the team today.
Fred Vasseur changed the atmosphere
The arrival of Fred Vasseur marked a significant turning point.
Since taking charge of Ferrari, the French team principal has worked to create a more balanced environment, ensuring that both Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton receive equal support and attention within the team structure.
Observers close to Ferrari believe Fred Vasseur deserves substantial credit for rebuilding trust and strengthening the connection between the Monegasque and the organization.
Mitchell-Malm argued that the Ferrari team principal has made a conscious effort to ensure both drivers have the resources and support they require to perform at their highest level. He also suggested that Charles Leclerc’s continued loyalty is tied not only to Ferrari itself but also to the confidence he has in Fred Vasseur’s leadership.
According to that analysis, there is a strong possibility that the 28-year-old would either have already left Ferrari or be actively considering an exit had Fred Vasseur not become team principal.
Lewis Hamilton creates a new challenge
While Charles Leclerc’s future at Ferrari now appears secure, the competitive landscape inside the team has changed dramatically following the arrival of Lewis Hamilton.
The seven-time world champion joined Ferrari carrying enormous expectations and has gradually become an increasingly influential figure within the organization. His recent victory in Barcelona further strengthened his position and reinforced the perception that he is becoming a major reference point for the team’s future direction.
Some former drivers and analysts have even suggested that Lewis Hamilton now occupies a leadership role within Ferrari. Among them is Nico Rosberg, who recently argued that the British driver has effectively become the central figure around whom much of the current project revolves.
For Charles Leclerc, this presents perhaps the most important challenge of his Ferrari career.
Throughout his time in Formula 1, the Monegasque has demonstrated exceptional speed over one lap and has delivered numerous standout performances. However, Lewis Hamilton’s experience, technical understanding and growing influence within the Scuderia mean that Charles Leclerc is now competing not only against one of the greatest drivers in Formula 1 history, but also against a teammate who is increasingly shaping the team’s future direction.
Time remains on Charles Leclerc’s side
Despite the attention surrounding Lewis Hamilton’s resurgence, Ferrari continues to view Charles Leclerc as a cornerstone of its long-term ambitions.
The team’s commitment to equal treatment remains unchanged, and Fred Vasseur has repeatedly emphasized the importance of maintaining balance between his two drivers.
That means the Monegasque still has every opportunity to reassert himself as Ferrari’s leading championship contender. Recent results may have tilted momentum toward Lewis Hamilton, but Formula 1 seasons are long, and competitive dynamics can shift rapidly.
What appears increasingly clear is that Ferrari now finds itself in a position many teams would envy: two elite drivers, both capable of winning races and fighting for championships, operating within a structure that is finally showing signs of stability.
For Charles Leclerc, the challenge is no longer deciding whether Ferrari is the right place for his future. The challenge now is proving that he can remain at the center of that future while sharing the garage with Lewis Hamilton.
