The new team principal will have less than two months to meet over a thousand people and also has a wealth of activities that he will no longer be able to follow unless it takes away precious time from Scuderia Ferrari
Frederic Vasseur from 9 January 2023 will be the new team principal and general manager of Scuderia Ferrari. The French manager arriving from Alfa Romeo Sauber will have less than two months (the first Grand Prix is scheduled to take place in Bahrain on March 5) to get to know more than a thousand employees and to establish himself as team boss of the Prancing Horse’s track activities. It will be a difficult task for Fred Vasseur, who in order to devote himself 100% to his new job first of all has several other stuff to sort out.
Indeed, as today’s edition of Il Corriere dello Sport points out, “Fred Vasseur is presented as a decision-maker and empathetic manager but from 9 January, the day he starts his job at Ferrari, he will have to deal with some resistance and will also have to decide who to entrust his business: the ART Grand Prix, Spark Racing Technology, which builds chassis for Formula E, the management of drivers such as Theo Pourchaire. All commitments that reduced his involvement at Alfa Romeo and this naturally cannot, must not happen in Maranello” – the Italian newspaper pointed out.
A rather long list of activities that have to at least be delegated because Ferrari is destined to completely absorb Fred Vasseur’s activity, although the position of general manager and not of managing director embodies the fact that in Maranello it will most likely be Benedetto Vigna who will establish hierarchies and dynamics in the factory, with Fred Vasseur responsible for what happens on the circuits as team principal.

To do it best, “Fred Vasseur will have to get to know and evaluate more than a thousand employees” – writes Leo Turrini in Il Resto del Carlino – find a recipe for managing the pit wall, intervene on communication, improve efficiency in the pit stops. A ‘Vaste programme’ would have said one of his compatriots, General De Gaulle”.
All without forgetting one other key aspect, linked to the relationship between Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz. Corriere della Sera, in fact, emphasizes the fact that “Charles Leclerc was one of his (Vasseur’s) sponsors, but the Frenchman will have to manage keeping Carlos Sainz happy as well. Smart, quick, and politically savvy.”
