Lewis Hamilton gains momentum at Monza as Ferrari sees renewed optimism after Italian GP
Lewis Hamilton produced an impressive recovery drive at the 2025 Italian Grand Prix, finishing sixth in front of the passionate Tifosi and sending a strong message about his adaptability and determination in his first season with Ferrari. The seven-time world champion entered Monza following a challenging debut period at Maranello, which included his first retirement for the team at Zandvoort. Both the Briton and his Maranello teammate Charles Leclerc had been forced to retire after incidents at turn three, leaving Ferrari eager to make amends on home soil.
Despite starting the Italian GP with a five-place grid penalty carried over from Zandvoort due to a double yellow flag infringement, Hamilton approached Monza with confidence. Ferrari’s engineers and management were optimistic, believing the SF-25 had the potential to challenge McLaren’s pace at the iconic track. During Friday practice, Hamilton demonstrated strong form by setting the fastest time in FP1, showcasing that the car and driver could be competitive. However, the positive momentum did not fully carry into Saturday’s qualifying session, where Hamilton ended up fifth, behind Charles Leclerc in fourth.
Hamilton expressed regret over the radio about his lack of pace as the penalty pushed him down to P10 on the grid, but he put those frustrations aside on race day. With composure and skill, he navigated the field and climbed back to P6, proving his resilience and ability to extract the maximum from the SF-25 even under challenging conditions.
Fred Vasseur highlights Hamilton’s fresh mindset after Monza
Team principal Fred Vasseur described Hamilton as seeing Monza as a psychological reset, a “new start to the season in his mind.” After a difficult start to life in red, which included both operational setbacks and performance struggles, the 40-year-old Brit found renewed confidence from his Monza drive. Ferrari has long grappled with the SF-25’s optimal setup, particularly ride height, as the car performs best when running extremely close to the ground. Hamilton had previously sent detailed feedback to Ferrari before the summer break, highlighting areas for improvement and requesting adjustments to enhance performance.
Hamilton’s ability to handle pressure at Monza drew comparisons to Nigel Mansell, with analysts noting his calm and methodical approach under challenging circumstances. While he did not finish as high as he would have liked, The Briton took significant encouragement from his performance, demonstrating that he is mentally recharged and ready to tackle the remainder of the 2025 season with Ferrari.
Fred Vasseur told F1 TV’s Post-Race Show that Hamilton delivered a “very strong weekend,” consistently performing well from FP1, through qualifying, and into the race. Despite the penalty, he fought hard in the opening laps, recovering to P6 and matching the pace of competitors like George Russell. The French manager emphasized that Lewis Hamilton now views the season as a fresh opportunity to compete at the highest level.
Lewis Hamilton’s Monza radio message delights Ferrari fans
The Italian Grand Prix may not have delivered a podium finish for Ferrari, but Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc’s efforts reinforced the team’s position in the standings, putting them 20 points ahead of Mercedes. Lewis Hamilton took the opportunity to thank the tifosi in Italian via his final radio message, showing genuine appreciation for their unwavering support. He also acknowledged the team’s efforts during the pit stops, demonstrating his gratitude and leadership within the garage.
At Monza, the British driver received louder cheers than Leclerc, highlighting the tifosi’s enthusiasm and belief in their new star driver despite a challenging season. Prior to the race, Hamilton had called on Ferrari fans for support, urging them to rally behind him at their home Grand Prix. The massive turnout and passionate response at Monza provided exactly that, giving Hamilton both motivation and energy to continue pushing forward in the remaining eight races of the season.
With his Monza performance, Lewis Hamilton has not only reinforced his resilience and technical feedback capabilities but also cemented a positive connection with the Ferrari fanbase, signaling that the seven-time world champion remains a key figure in the Maranello team’s present and future ambitions.
