Fred Vasseur explained how Ferrari is approaching the final races to push to the maximum and try to win the championship. After the United States Grand Prix at the Austin circuit, the Ferrari team principal first spoke about the Maranello team’s hopes of winning the championship. The task is challenging, but after the recent races, the gap with rivals has significantly decreased, and pushing to the maximum could indeed lead to a surprising result.
Ferrari seemed destined for an anonymous third place in the constructors’ championship, but the difficulties of Red Bull and McLaren’s mistakes have been a big surprise. Now, the Maranello team finds itself 48 points behind the Woking team and only 8 points behind the current world champions. A gap that seemed unimaginable just a few races ago.
What is behind Ferrari’s new approach?
The secret lies precisely here. Frederic Vasseur himself explained what approach Ferrari is taking and why the mentality of the Maranello team can truly make a difference. “We are not thinking about the championship, and I want to keep this mindset within the team because I think it’s important to focus on pure performance, session by session, and not have the championship in mind.” – the French manager pointed out at the end of the United States Grand Prix.
He then clarifies why it is necessary to stay calm and grounded. “A week or two ago, everyone was talking about McLaren, before that it was Mercedes, and before that it was Red Bull. We need to take it with a bit of distance; we have never talked about anything like that because we know the road is still very long.” – he added.
“If anything can happen in the end, it will come more from day-to-day performance than from closing in on the overall championship. We know perfectly well that next week will be a completely different challenge. In Mexico, we have to start from scratch as if what happened in Austin never occurred.” – the Frenchman continued.
He then concludes decisively: “What I want is for people to take more risks and have the power to take risks. I think we are in this mindset and approach. Surely, we need to improve, but it is important to maintain this mentality. Achieving a good result should not make you complacent, and on the Monday after the race, you need to focus on continuing to improve.”
