Fred Vasseur plays down expectations for Ferrari ahead of tricky Canadian GP Sprint weekend. Ferrari preview: Why Fred Vasseur is bracing for a tough technical challenge in Canada.

Fred Vasseur, Ferrari team boss, 2026 F1

Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur has struck a cautious tone ahead of the 2026 Formula 1 Canadian Grand Prix, warning that low temperatures and the Sprint weekend format could make life significantly more complicated for the Scuderia at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.

The Ferrari team is preparing for the 44th edition of the Canadian Grand Prix, with the Montreal event firmly established as one of the historic fixtures on the Formula 1 calendar. Traditionally, the Maranello-based team approaches the semi-permanent circuit on Notre Dame Island with confidence, given its strong history at the venue.

Ferrari has claimed 12 victories at the circuit named after Gilles Villeneuve, making it one of the team’s most successful destinations outside Europe. It is no surprise, then, that Fred Vasseur was keen to underline the special bond between Ferrari and the Canadian race weekend.

“Canada is always a special event, with a fantastic atmosphere both in the city and at the track, and we know how much support Ferrari receives there, also thanks to the many fans of Italian heritage.”

Montreal’s stop-and-go layout is notoriously demanding, placing heavy stress on the power unit, brakes, and tyres due to repeated hard acceleration zones and aggressive braking points. This year, however, the challenge becomes even greater with the introduction of the Sprint format, which leaves teams with just a single free practice session to dial in the setup before competitive running begins.

That compressed schedule could heavily reward the teams that arrive with the most accurate simulator data and the clearest baseline setup, while punishing anyone who struggles to unlock performance quickly.

“From a sporting point of view,” added Fred Vasseur, “Montréal is never straightforward. The track is extremely demanding on the brakes, traction is crucial when exiting the slow corners and chicanes, and this year the weather and low temperatures could add an extra layer of complexity, especially with the Sprint format giving us very little time to prepare.”

But what should Ferrari fans realistically expect from the SF-26 this weekend?

The Italian side introduced a major upgrade package in Miami, but the true extent of the performance gain remains unclear. Ferrari showed glimpses of potential, yet it was difficult to determine exactly how much ground had been recovered against McLaren and Red Bull, both of whom also introduced significant developments.

This time, another major variable enters the equation: Mercedes is expected to bring a substantial upgrade package of its own, potentially reshuffling the competitive order once again.

Fred Vasseur, however, is refusing to make bold predictions before the cars hit the track: “We will need to be ready from the very first session, focus on execution, and make the most of every opportunity throughout the weekend.”

Ferrari left Miami with the impression of a team that had not fully managed to put all the pieces together. The raw pace may have been there in flashes, but extracting consistent performance from the SF-26 remained a challenge. That makes the Canadian Grand Prix a crucial test for the Scuderia. Montreal could reveal whether Ferrari has identified the right setup direction and understood how to unlock the car’s full potential, or whether urgent corrective action will be needed if the team wants to remain in the fight at the front of the 2026 Formula 1 championship.

For now, Ferrari appears set to approach the Canadian Grand Prix with caution rather than confidence, ready to capitalise on any opportunity that presents itself during what could be one of the most unpredictable weekends of the season.

Fred Vasseur’s grounded and defensive rhetoric heading into the Canadian Grand Prix underlines the immense pressure modern F1 teams face when navigating a restrictive Sprint weekend. With only 60 minutes of practice to dial in a complex ground-effect chassis on a green, cold, and heavily riasphalted street circuit, Ferrari cannot afford any simulation errors. While the SF-26 possesses a brilliant mechanical baseline, fighting against a power unit deficit means that flawless operational execution is their only pathway to a podium. If Vasseur’s squad can remain disciplined, survive the tricky tire-warming phases in the cooler climate, and execute clean pit stops, they can maximize their points haul before the sport heads back to Europe for the definitive developmental push.
