Fred Vasseur outlines his top priority amid growing concerns Ferrari could lose Charles Leclerc. Discover why Charles Leclerc’s future at Ferrari remains uncertain in 2026.

Fred Vasseur, Ferrari team boss, 2025 F1

Charles Leclerc currently holds the longest contract on the 2026 Formula 1 grid, having secured a deal with Ferrari that extends through 2029. However, despite being tied to the Scuderia for several more seasons, his future with the Italian outfit remains increasingly uncertain. Ferrari moved decisively in January 2024 to lock Charles Leclerc into a long-term contract, anticipating the expiration of his previous deal that year. Yet the 28-year-old Monegasque driver has reportedly begun to reconsider his commitment to the team due to the ongoing struggles that have plagued Ferrari since he signed.

The 2025 season marked Charles Leclerc’s fourth winless year in his seven seasons with Ferrari, following earlier campaigns without victories in 2020, 2021, and 2023. With Formula 1 entering a new era under the 2026 regulations, this year is viewed by Leclerc as a pivotal moment—a potential turning point for both the Scuderia and his own career. He has conveyed the belief that the upcoming season represents a “now or never” scenario for Ferrari to demonstrate their competitiveness under the latest technical rules. How effectively the team adapts to the 2026 regulations will play a decisive role in shaping Leclerc’s long-term future with the Maranello-based team.

Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur is reportedly focused on persuading Leclerc to remain committed to the team. Sources indicate that Leclerc has the option to activate a release clause in his contract in 2026, allowing him to leave Ferrari without financial penalty if the team fails to provide a competitive car. This clause was negotiated as part of his long-term contract, giving the eight-time Grand Prix winner some flexibility should Ferrari not meet performance expectations.

According to reports from the Mirror, concerns are growing within Ferrari that Leclerc could explore opportunities with rival teams if the Scuderia are not competitive under the 2026 regulations. In response, Vasseur has made it his primary objective to restore Leclerc’s confidence in the team and in Ferrari’s ability to contend for race victories and championships. Convincing the Monegasque to commit to a new long-term contract remains a top priority, as the team is keen to avoid the risk of losing him while three years still remain on his current deal.

Leclerc has signaled that he is willing to give Ferrari the chance to prove themselves under the new regulations. However, he is also clear that his patience is not unlimited. While he has instructed his manager to refrain from entering discussions with other teams for the moment, he has not ruled out the possibility of moving elsewhere if Ferrari fail to demonstrate clear progress.

The Monegasque driver’s connection to Ferrari runs deep. He joined the Ferrari Driver Academy in 2016, made his Formula 1 debut with Sauber in 2018, and became part of the Scuderia in 2019. Nevertheless, his ambition to consistently challenge for the Formula 1 drivers’ championship may ultimately lead him to consider a move to a more competitive team if Ferrari cannot meet his expectations.

Several teams are reportedly monitoring Leclerc’s situation closely. McLaren has expressed interest in signing him should Oscar Piastri decide to leave the Woking-based outfit at the end of 2026. Aston Martin, under the leadership of Adrian Newey as their new team principal, could also be a strong contender, as both Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll are set to become free agents at the end of this season. Additionally, Red Bull may target Leclerc if Max Verstappen were to depart, given that the Dutch driver also has the option to break his contract through 2028.

With his career ambitions and Ferrari’s performance closely intertwined, the 2026 season promises to be a critical period for both Charles Leclerc and the Scuderia. How the team performs under the new regulations, and whether Vasseur can rebuild the driver’s confidence, will likely determine whether Leclerc remains a central figure in Ferrari’s future or seeks a new challenge elsewhere in the Formula 1 paddock.
