Fred Vasseur reveals the unexpected beginning of Lewis Hamilton’s Ferrari transfer
Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur has shared new details about how Lewis Hamilton’s blockbuster move to the Scuderia first took shape, revealing that what eventually became one of Formula 1’s biggest driver transfers actually started as a light-hearted conversation.
The Briton’s arrival at Ferrari has been one of the defining stories of the current Formula 1 era. While the announcement sent shockwaves through the paddock, Fred Vasseur has now explained that the foundations of the deal were laid long before anyone outside the two parties suspected a move was even possible.
Speaking about the origins of the negotiations, the Frenchman admitted that the first discussions took place only a few months after he became Ferrari team principal at the beginning of 2023.
“The first time we discussed it was a few months after I arrived at Ferrari. At first, it was more of a joke: you throw something out there in a humorous way and see how the other person reacts.”
A birthday meeting in Monaco changed everything
As the 2023 season progressed, the conversations became increasingly serious. The French manager recalled a key meeting during the Monaco Grand Prix weekend that ultimately changed the direction of Hamilton’s future.
“We talked about it more seriously on May 28, at his home in Monaco, during the Grand Prix weekend. I remember the date because it was my birthday.”
Even then, however, completing the deal appeared far from straightforward. Hamilton was widely expected to remain with Mercedes, while Ferrari already had Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz under contract for the 2024 Formula 1 season.
“The situation was strange because, on his side, he was supposed to renew his contract with Mercedes, while on mine, I already had my two drivers for 2024. We left the conversation thinking it was going to be complicated.”
At that stage, neither side believed the timing was right. Yet Formula 1’s driver market can change rapidly, and the situation evolved within just a few weeks.
How the opportunity finally opened up
According to Vasseur, Hamilton later returned after agreeing a one-year extension with Mercedes that included an option for a second season under his control. That contractual structure would eventually create the flexibility needed to make the move to Maranello a reality.
“He came back to me a few weeks later, after securing a one-year contract with an option in his favour for a second year. The path was clear, and we reached an agreement.”
That sequence of events ultimately paved the way for Ferrari to secure one of the most decorated drivers in Formula 1 history. The agreement also brought an end to Hamilton’s remarkable partnership with Mercedes, where he won six of his seven world championships.
Hamilton’s long-standing Ferrari dream
Perhaps the most revealing part of Fred Vasseur’s account was his suggestion that Ferrari had always held a special place in Lewis Hamilton’s ambitions, even during the years in which he dominated Formula 1 with Mercedes.
“Ferrari had been in his mind for a very, very long time, and the planets aligned when I took up my role. He had always carried that dream deep inside him.”
Hamilton himself has previously spoken about the unique appeal of racing for Ferrari, a team whose history and legacy have attracted many of the sport’s greatest champions. Vasseur’s latest comments offer fresh insight into how that long-held ambition finally became reality, with a chance conversation eventually evolving into one of the most significant driver signings Formula 1 has ever witnessed.
