Ferrari, developments needed after Chinese Grand Prix

Considering the gap that Scuderia Ferrari accumulated from Red Bull in the 2024 Formula 1 Chinese Grand Prix (23 seconds, but only thanks to the Safety Car), it’s natural to think that the SF-24 needs a significant development package like the one the RB20 has been able to exploit since Suzuka.

However, the Scuderia was also clearly inferior to McLaren, which has not yet brought developments (it will have a good package in Miami). Today – at least with Lando Norris – the Woking team has outperformed Ferrari on hard tires: updates can indeed improve the situation, but always in relation to the progress of others. And especially in Florida, Ferrari will have to significantly increase their pace in qualifying if they want to have a satisfactory weekend.

On the development topic, Ferrari team principal Frederic Vasseur was clear: “The guys at the factory are working day and night to bring updates for the upcoming races, and I couldn’t ask for more. We have already introduced some small pieces and we are pushing like crazy” – the French manager explained in his interview for Sky Sport F1 following he race which was held at the 5.451-kilometre Shanghai International Circuit on Sunday.

“It’s also worth considering that it’s not easy to bring something new for Sprint events because there’s only one hour of free practice. We haven’t changed plans because we’re already pushing to the maximum. I think the problem this weekend was not being able to extract what we could from the car’s potential. We need to do a better job in qualifying: with a front row, and I don’t think it was out of reach, it would have definitely been a different race. I believe yesterday the pace was better compared to Norris’s,” – the Ferrari team boss concluded.
