Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur returns to speak about the FIA directive regarding flexible wings and admits there are other more decisive factors, in terms of performance, to consider.
At the Spanish Grand Prix, the FIA introduced stricter tests concerning the flexibility of front wings. It was thought that the introduction of these tests might reshuffle the competitive field; in particular, it was believed that McLaren, the championship leader, could be the most penalized, but this was not the case: the Woking team dominated the weekend from start to finish, securing another one-two finish. The FIA directive on flexible wings thus proved to be a flop, as Lewis Hamilton said, describing it as “a real waste of money.” According to Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur, there are other factors to focus on beyond the flexibility of the front wings.
A common problem
“If you look at the race picture [Spanish GP] at lap 40, we were five seconds behind Lando Norris, and I believe that means our race pace was by far better compared to three or four races ago, when in Miami they even lapped us,” the Frenchman told the media.
“Honestly, I don’t think it’s thanks to the front wing, it’s not a shortcut. We all have the same problem understanding tires and compounds in terms of consistency and performance. This is not just true for us, but also for others.” – the Ferrari team boss pointed out following the Spanish Grand Prix weekend at the Circuit de Catalunya in Barcelona.
“There is much more to gain on this aspect than the marginal difference of the front wing. Certainly, it’s not the main factor determining performance, but it still must be taken into consideration, because even a tenth can completely change the grid, and that means it can still make a difference in terms of performance.” – Frederic Vasseur concluded.
