Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur has offered fresh insight into the internal transformation taking place at Maranello, highlighting the importance of Loic Serra in helping reshape the Scuderia’s Formula 1 project after the setbacks of the 2025 campaign.
While much of the public focus naturally falls on visible upgrades, aerodynamic concepts and the performances of Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc on race weekends, Ferrari’s leadership believes some of the most meaningful changes have happened behind closed doors inside the factory.
After a frustrating 2025 season that left Ferrari battling technical limitations and strategic constraints, the Maranello team entered a crucial rebuilding phase. According to Fred Vasseur, one of the most influential figures in that reset has been former Mercedes engineer Loic Serra, whose arrival added not only technical expertise but also a far more aggressive competitive mentality.
A difficult starting point for Ferrari’s rebuild
Loic Serra officially joined Ferrari in October 2024, but the timing of his arrival created immediate complications. By that stage, the foundations of the SF-25 had already been largely established, meaning the French engineer had limited ability to fundamentally reshape the project’s original direction.
The car concept had already been defined before his arrival, leaving Ferrari trapped with decisions that could not easily be reversed mid-cycle. Fred Vasseur acknowledged that the team found itself in an especially complicated situation, with certain technical weaknesses becoming increasingly difficult to manage as the season progressed.
Among the biggest problems were aerodynamic and floor-related limitations that significantly restricted performance, contributing to some of Ferrari’s most painful moments of the campaign, including the high-profile disqualification setback in China.
In Formula 1, timing is everything. Joining a team in the middle of a live project rarely allows an engineer to impose sweeping technical changes immediately, particularly under cost cap restrictions and compressed development timelines.
Why Loic Serra made an immediate difference
Despite those limitations, Fred Vasseur indicated that Loic Serra quickly found ways to make a meaningful contribution.
Rather than attempting to rewrite a project already too advanced to fundamentally redesign, the former Mercedes figure reportedly concentrated on operational execution and trackside performance optimization. That pragmatic contribution became particularly important during the closing stages of the season, helping Ferrari strengthen processes and create a more competitive platform for the future.
According to Fred Vasseur’s assessment, that groundwork helped position Ferrari far more effectively heading into the next phase of development, which is especially important as the Scuderia continues refining the SF-26 for Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc.
The mentality shift inside Maranello
Perhaps even more significant than the technical contribution, however, has been the cultural impact Loic Serra has had inside Ferrari.
Fred Vasseur made it clear that what stands out most is Serra’s uncompromising competitive mindset. Rather than accepting limitations, the experienced engineer reportedly approaches Formula 1 with the mentality of someone obsessed with extracting every possible fraction of performance.
That attitude aligns closely with the wider cultural reset Fred Vasseur has been driving at Ferrari: a move away from excessive caution and toward a more aggressive, performance-focused operating model.
Ferrari’s leadership appears convinced that success in modern Formula 1 depends not only on technical innovation, but also on building a racing culture where marginal gains are relentlessly pursued across every department.
For Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc, the benefits of that transformation could prove decisive as Ferrari attempts to re-establish itself as a genuine championship contender in Formula 1’s increasingly intense competitive environment.
