Fred Vasseur explains difference between Ferrari drivers is not due to updates

Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz compared: the difference between the two is really minimal in races. Both Ferrari drivers push hard on the track. That’s why we often find reversed situations where first the Monegasque seems to be in control, then the Spaniard seems to have the upper hand.

Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur knows that managing two hotheads in the same team is not easy. In a long interview with AMUS (Auto Motor und Sport), the French manager explained what he thinks is the difference between Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz on the track – and it doesn’t depend on the type of updates or the driving style they adopt.

“I don’t think it depends on the updates,” the Frenchman replied. “It’s more of a competition between the two. They are both very close to each other. Then one of them has a good result, which inspires him for a few races. Just like Carlos did last year from Zandvoort to Singapore. That pushed Charles so much that he came back from Suzuka until the end of the season.” – Fred Vasseur pointed out.

Sometimes, however, there are certain circumstances where both Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz have a good feeling with the car that makes them hyper-competitive. As happened in Spain.

“It’s about a tenth of a difference between them. Sometimes the gap is even too narrow. It’s not even clear on individual weekends,” Fred Vasseur continued. “In Barcelona Carlos started better and Charles finished better.” – he added.

On the Montmelò circuit there were sparks between the two Ferrari drivers, and the team principal had to intervene. Fortunately, everything was resolved, but Frederic Vasseur is not worried about the competition which he believes is positive for the Maranello team. “In this way, the drivers push each other to always do better.” – the Ferrari team boss concluded.
