Scuderia Ferrari team principal Frederic Vasseur admitted that he has always had a good relationship with Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff, but at the same time he confirmed that he is willing to “fight like hell” with his new rivals, both “on and off the track”.
The new Ferrari boss and the Austrian manager are known to be friends for many years, as the two often seen together in the paddock during the race weekends.
With Fred Vasseur leaving Sauber Alfa Romeo to move to Scuderia Ferrari as Team Principal and General Manager, replacing Mattia Binotto, there are many who believe that his friendship with Toto Wolff, the team principal of the Italian side’s rivals, the Silver Arrows – will eventually change.
The Frenchman is aware that he is facing a difficult challenge and expects a real battle with Toto Wolff when it comes to what happens on the racing tracks:
“I know that we will fight on track, we’ll fight to the stewards, we’ll fight in the FIA, we’ll fight [over] the Concorde Agreement,” Frederic Vasseur said in a recent interview for the Italian and International media – “And this is life.”
The new Ferrari team principal confirmed that it would be good for Formula One to have a good relationships and cooperation between the team bosses:

“I think for the global picture, it’s an advantage to have a very good collaboration between teams. When the common interest of the teams [and] F1 will be to have a discussion and to find an agreement, I think it will be a huge advantage to have a good relationship. I have good relationships with [several] of my colleagues, and I think this is always good. [But you can] be sure that I will fight like hell with Toto on track and [off] the track.” – he explained.
Scuderia Ferrari was able to defend its second place in the Constructors’ Championship against Mercedes last season, despite the fact that in the final part of the season, the Silver Arrows seemed to recover the performance deficit seen in the first half. Scuderia Ferrari, Red Bull and Mercedes are expected to battle for the 2023 Formula 1 titles.
