In a related management shuffle, Audi announced before the Belgian Grand Prix at the 7.004-kilometre Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps that Andreas Seidl would be leaving its Formula 1 project. Seidl, who departed McLaren, had started with Audi in January of the previous year.
Replacing Andreas Seidl at Audi will be Mattia Binotto, the former Ferrari team principal, who will now lead Audi’s Formula 1 project as part of a significant restructuring. Former Ferrari team boss Mattia Binotto began his new role on August 1. After leaving the Maranello team at the end of the 2022 Formula 1 championship, the Italian manager was succeeded by former Sauber team principal Frederic Vasseur, who has been leading Ferrari in the last two years.
When questioned about Mattia Binotto’upcoming return to the Formula 1 paddock, Fred Vasseur opted for a reserved response: “Do I want to comment? Absolutely not. I focus on my team, my guys, and I completely understand that building a Formula 1 team is challenging.” – the French manager explained.
“I think it’s difficult everywhere. Mattia did an excellent job at Ferrari in the past. He was successful and made the team a winner. I wish them all the best, but it’s not up to me to comment on Mattia’s potential at Audi.” – Fred Vasseur added.
French engineer Laurent Mekies, who moved to Scuderia Ferrari in September 2018 as sporting director and was later appointed as Deputy Team Principal and Racing Director of Ferrari, working alongside Mattia Binotto for five years, also also asked about this news: “In terms of skills, there is no doubt that Mattia has everything it takes to make things work there, and probably elsewhere as well. I believe Audi will become an even stronger competitor in the near future.” concluded the Visa Cash RB team principal.
