Frederic Vasseur has made it clear that Ferrari has no intention of slowing its 2026 Formula 1 development programme, insisting the team has enough budget cap margin to continue introducing updates at the same pace until the final race of the season. The Ferrari team principal’s comments came after renewed remarks from Mercedes boss Toto Wolff about the financial limits facing Formula 1’s leading teams.
The debate has highlighted the different development strategies adopted by Ferrari, Red Bull, McLaren and Mercedes during the 2026 season. While Ferrari and Red Bull have introduced new components relatively consistently, McLaren has tended to accumulate larger upgrade packages for specific points in the campaign. Mercedes, meanwhile, has appeared to have less freedom to develop because of the cost cap.
Ferrari and its rivals take different approaches to F1 upgrades
The contrast between those philosophies has already produced a pointed exchange between Toto Wolff and Frederic Vasseur in recent months. Ferrari has continued working across several areas of the SF-26, with its recent Italian Grand Prix upgrade package providing another example of Maranello’s ongoing development programme.
On the sidelines of the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort, Toto Wolff went further with his comments, suggesting that McLaren might no longer have the financial resources available for further development.
McLaren team principal Andrea Stella responded calmly: “We managed our spending with 2026 in mind, having been very clear from the beginning that it would be a development battle. We carried out our work, selecting the projects in which to invest the budget to fund the developments brought in Hungary, in the Netherlands, here and for the rest of the year.
“In addition, there is an extra budget for 2027 and I think Mercedes will use it too, because I understand that they will bring updates. I also understand that McLaren is smaller than Mercedes and therefore has lower labour costs, which we can allocate to upgrades.”
Frederic Vasseur says Ferrari has budget cap margin for more development
Frederic Vasseur was asked the same question during the Monza press conference: whether Ferrari still had enough room under the Formula 1 budget cap to continue developing the SF-26 during the remainder of the season.
“I don’t want to make any comment about Toto’s cost cap,” Frederic Vasseur said. “I don’t like it when somebody talks about my budget without having the slightest idea about it. I won’t comment on the others. But what I know is that we will continue to develop until the last race at the same pace and we will have a safety margin on the budget cap.”
Vasseur’s comments underline Ferrari’s intention to remain active in the development race rather than freezing the SF-26 specification during the final part of 2026. That approach has already been visible at Monza, where Ferrari introduced several efficiency-focused changes, including a modified SF-26 FTM designed to reduce drag.
The team’s work is also extending beyond aerodynamic refinements. Ferrari has continued developing its Power Unit and floor package, with Charles Leclerc assessing the latest engine and floor upgrades ahead of the Italian Grand Prix.
Ferrari plans to keep pushing until the end of 2026
With the four leading teams following noticeably different development programmes, managing the cost cap has become another important element of the competitive battle. Teams must decide not only which upgrades are worth pursuing, but also how to distribute their available resources across the remainder of 2026 and preparations for 2027.
For Ferrari, however, Vasseur’s position is unequivocal: Maranello intends to maintain its current development rhythm through the final Grand Prix while preserving a financial safety margin.
