Frederic Vasseur also surprised by the pole position
An unexpected pole position, almost falling from the sky at the 7.004-kilometre Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps, which had been pouring rain since the morning but paradoxically favored Scuderia Ferrari, although Charles Leclerc had to put in a lot of effort in order to secure the second position, that means starting from pole position in tomorrow’s Belgian Grand Prix thanks to the ten-place penalty that Max Verstappen will serve for replacing his fifth power unit of the 2024 Formula 1 season.
Frederic Vasseur is also smiling, as surprised as Charles Leclerc by the pole position achieved in wet conditions: “Charles did a great lap and the strategy worked in our favor because we decided to refuel between the two laps. In the end, when the gap from Perez is less than a hundredth, I think it paid off. Sometimes the coin falls on the right side or the wrong side, but the choices we made today worked perfectly.” – the French manager pointed out at the end of the qualifying session for the Belgian Grand Prix.
“I am surprised that anyone could doubt his motivation. He is very motivated and doesn’t need additional boosts of confidence. Surely this result will do him good, but we know that points are earned tomorrow.” – he added.
Finally, speaking about the goal for tomorrow’s race, Fred Vasseur stated: “We need to appreciate this achievement and enjoy it. Surely I would prefer to start in first position rather than third or fourth, but let’s see what happens tomorrow between the starting line and the finish line. However, I prefer to start on pole.”
“I don’t make predictions for the race or for turn 1. We need to start well and also know that there are opportunities to overtake here. We need to focus on our car. We already have a lot to do on our own, we don’t look at others. We took a conservative approach, bringing 2 sets of Hard and 1 of Medium to the race. The race pace was good, the tests were good. Tomorrow we will need to be focused, aware that McLaren and Max are very strong.” – the Ferrari team principal concluded.
