Frederic Vasseur’s reflections after the Italian Grand Prix
Frederic Vasseur spoke in the press conference following the Italian Grand Prix at Monza, where Ferrari finished with Charles Leclerc in fourth place and Lewis Hamilton in sixth. The Ferrari team principal admitted that while a podium would have been the perfect reward for the passionate Tifosi, the Scuderia will have other opportunities to fight back in the final part of the season.
Monza, Fred Vasseur looks ahead
The expectations going into the weekend did not turn into reality. Ferrari’s strong pace in FP1 and the narrow gaps behind McLaren in the other two free practice sessions had raised the hopes of the fans, but both qualifying and the race delivered a clear verdict on the SF-25’s performance. As Charles Leclerc himself pointed out, finishing higher than fourth was simply not possible.
Fred Vasseur would have loved to celebrate with a podium finish to repay the affection of the Italian crowd, but he remains confident that Ferrari can aim higher in the upcoming rounds of the championship.
Fred Vasseur’s words
“I think we have a couple of tracks where we should be in good shape, starting from the next one. The target is to secure second place in the Constructors’ Championship, which we are fighting for with Red Bull and Mercedes, while McLaren are on another level,” said the Frenchman.
“It’s disappointing not to have reached the podium, it would have been magical given the passion of the fans. I think today we were very close to McLaren, the gap was minimal, probably the smallest of the season when comparing ourselves to them,” he continued.
The Ferrari team principal also praised Lewis Hamilton’s drive, moving up from tenth on the grid to finish sixth: “At the end of the day Lewis’s pace was stronger from the start compared to Charles. During the race he fought with Russell, which shows he had recovered into a better position. I think the energy he received from the fans in Milan on Wednesday was something very special for him, and I believe it gave him an extra boost throughout the weekend.” – the Ferrari team boss concluded at the end of the Italian Grand Prix.
