Ferrari, the key test for the updated floor
In previewing the Hungaroring weekend, Frederic Vasseur had announced an evolved floor on the SF-24, which was essentially the one from Montmeló with some technical adjustments. The solution worked in Hungary, but more reliable feedback will be needed this weekend. Spa-Francorchamps is indeed a major test for Ferrari’s “evo” floor: if the medium-speed corners in Hungary could “mask” the problems with aerodynamic bouncing that re-emerged with the Montmeló package, the high-speed corners of the iconic Belgian track are unforgiving.
Ferrari team principal Frederic Vasseur seems to suggest that Ferrari will bring the evolved floor from Hungary also to the Belgian Grand Prix, something Carlos Sainz had anticipated right after the Hungaroring.
Frederic Vasseur’s comments
“The Belgian Grand Prix concludes a particularly challenging July for the team on track and for everyone working at the factory in Maranello. The Spa-Francorchamps circuit will allow us to verify if we have done a good job in recent weeks to mitigate the side effects that the recently introduced upgrade package has given us in high-speed corners. Bouncing was greatly reduced at the Hungaroring, thanks to the evolution of the floor brought to Budapest, and now we will see if this is also the case on the Belgian corners,” said the Frenchman. “Our drivers have always loved this track, a circuit where driver skill can really make a difference, and it was here that Charles achieved his first Formula 1 victory in 2019. If we provide Carlos and Charles with an SF-24 they can confidently push to the limit, I believe we can have a competitive weekend and bring home many points.”
Initially, Ferrari’s plans were to bring the old floor (introduced at the Imola circuit) to Spa-Francorchamps precisely to avoid the bouncing problems experienced from the Spanish Grand Prix onwards.
