The Zandvoort layout is extremely twisty and demands a solid mechanical-aerodynamic balance. The sequence of many corners requires levels of downforce similar to those used in Monaco. This is necessary to prevent the rear wheels from sliding and overheating. Let’s take a look at how the race pace simulations went during the second free practice session for the 2023 Formula 1 Dutch Grand Prix.
Max Stands Strong, Mercedes Improves
Naturally, the home driver doesn’t want to disappoint the orange crowd at Zandvoort, and his race pace simulation was excellent. The Dutch driver, along with Lewis Hamilton and George Russell, were the only ones to record times below 1:16.0, with the Dutchman repeatedly dipping under this barrier. His average lap time was 1:16.113 on the red tire. The simulation for the two W14 cars was also promising; they tried mediums for Lewis Hamilton and softs for George Russell. Both managed to maintain a very consistent rhythm, with Hamilton at 1:16.3 and Russell at 1:16.5.
Dutch GP FP2 Race Pace
Lando Norris’s simulation was a bit uneven as he completed his stint on the red tires. The MCL60 likely requires further refinement to better utilize the new rear wing. Despite this, his average lap time is comparable to Mercedes, with a calculated pace of 1:16.524.

The first free practice session showed the SF-23 struggling with oversteer on corner exits, particularly at Turn 10. Both drivers had to make constant corrections on the steering wheel to prevent spins. The lack of rear-end grip also affected their simulation, which remained consistent but far from competitive. Both drivers attempted the red tires, resulting in an average of 1:16.695 for Charles Leclerc and 1:16.745 for Carlos Sainz. Evidently, the Scuderia’s garage is still in search of an ideal setup for an increasingly unpredictable SF-23. We’ll see if the work done at the Maranello simulator will help refine the lap times recorded in this session.
