Formula 1 will undergo a dramatic transformation in 2026 thanks to a new set of innovative regulations designed to reshape the dynamics of racing. At the heart of this revolution will be the introduction of movable front and rear wings, which will gradually replace the traditional DRS. Combined with a much more strategic use of electric energy, these changes aim to make overtaking far more unpredictable and spectacular.
Movable wings for more dynamic racing
Former Ferrari senior design engineer, head of the R&D department and deputy chief design director Simone Resta, currently the deputy technical director at Mercedes, explained how the new movable wings will change the nature of the races compared to qualifying, with drivers required to use these dynamic aerodynamic surfaces in multiple parts of the circuit to support overtaking. “There will be a ‘Z mode’ to maximise downforce in the corners and an ‘X mode’ to reduce aerodynamic drag on the straights,” Simone Resta said, highlighting how this will make the cars feel more “alive” and the use of electric energy more strategic and unpredictable. The importance of the DRS — which currently limits overtakes to specific zones and conditions — will drop drastically, giving way to a much more integrated and sophisticated system.
More excitement and tighter battles
Nikolas Tombazis, FIA head of aerodynamics, agreed with this outlook, adding that the new regulations may initially create slightly larger gaps between the teams but are ultimately designed to promote much closer and more exciting on-track battles. “The key point is that the cars will be able to follow each other better thanks to a cleaner wake, and electric energy will become a strategic weapon for overtaking. This will profoundly change the spectacle on track,” he said, emphasising how the aerodynamic and technological innovations of the 2026 cars are the result of extensive research into car behaviour since the 2022 rule change.
The introduction of movable wings — supported by a safety system that automatically returns the wings to a stable position in case of malfunction — brings new challenges for both drivers and teams. They will have to develop more versatile setups and smarter energy-management strategies. Fans can expect far more exciting and tactical races, marking a clear evolution in Formula 1’s approach and overall spectacle.
