After the alleged complaints from Alpine regarding the power deficit of their own power unit compared to the competition, the F1 Commission and the Power Unit Advisory Committee will evaluate the introduction of BoP (Balance of Performance) on engines. According to recent rumors, concerns have emerged about the performance disparity between the Power Unit of the French team and those of Mercedes, Ferrari, and Honda.

“In relation to power units, at the beginning of this regulation cycle, it was agreed with the power unit manufacturers that there would be the possibility to adjust the performance of the PUs from 2023 onwards, in order to avoid a significant performance gap being frozen for an extended period,” reads a note released by the F1 Commission following today’s meeting.

“The FIA has analyzed the performance of the car power units in the first half of 2023 and has concluded that there is a notable performance gap between the competitors.”

Therefore, after Alpine’s complaints, the federation itself confirms the power discrepancy among the engines on the grid. Recent reports claim that the power unit of the French team has even 30 horsepower less compared to its competitors. This has led to the need to request a performance leveling on the engines.

“Based on the commitment of the power unit manufacturers and the performance differences mentioned above, the F1 Commission has discussed ways to address this discrepancy,” the statement continues.

“The power unit manufacturers represented on the Commission have decided to mandate the Power Unit Advisory Committee to consider this topic and present proposals to the Commission.”

Although a final decision has not been made, the idea has not been completely rejected from the outset. Updates will surely follow in the coming weeks.
