F1 | Monza targets contract renewal as Imola eyes return to calendar: first confirmations arrive from ACI
Italy’s two historic Formula 1 Grands Prix, the Italian Grand Prix at Monza and the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix at Imola, have received significant financial backing aimed at securing their future on the Formula 1 calendar. The Automobile Club d’Italia (ACI) is currently working to establish open communication with Formula 1 management regarding the contract extension for Monza and the potential return of Imola in future seasons.
A press conference took place earlier today at the ACI’s headquarters in Rome, where the official promotional poster for the 2025 Italian Grand Prix was unveiled. In attendance were the newly elected president of ACI, Geronimo La Russa, ACI’s Special Commissioner Tullio Del Sette, and the Deputy Special Commissioner, Giovanni Battista Tombolato.
Strategic investments to remain on the Formula 1 calendar
The current contract for the Italian Grand Prix held at the Monza circuit is valid until the end of the 2031 Formula 1 season. However, the ambition remains to continue with the modernization and redevelopment works at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza to ensure the historic venue’s ongoing presence in the championship. Known as the “Temple of Speed,” Monza is a landmark not only for Italian motorsport fans but also for the global Formula 1 community. It has hosted more Grands Prix than any other venue and represents an irreplaceable part of F1 history.
The Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari in Imola, meanwhile, made its most recent appearance on the Formula 1 calendar during the 2025 season. However, the prospect of its return remains open, with discussions ongoing about a possible comeback in the coming years. As of now, the Spanish Grand Prix, which is set to be held in Madrid from 2026, is not yet fully confirmed. Should the Madrid project face delays or complications, Imola is currently positioned as a prime alternative to fill that calendar slot for the next season.
Giovanni Battista Tombolato shared updates on the institutional efforts being undertaken to secure both the renewal of the Monza contract and Imola’s reintegration into the Formula 1 calendar. He revealed that the Italian government, along with the Ministry of Transport, has committed to providing €5 million annually to support both events through to the 2032 season. Tombolato expressed confidence that if the opportunity to retain Imola arises, the Ministry of Sport and the Ministry of Economy and Finance would also step in with further support to ensure its inclusion in Formula 1.
Presentation of the 2025 Italian Grand Prix poster
Today’s conference was primarily held to present the official poster for the 2025 edition of the Italian Grand Prix, scheduled to take place at Monza from September 5th to 7th. The central theme of the artwork is “speed,” which is artistically depicted through a dynamic vortex in the colors of the Italian national flag, seamlessly blending with ACI’s institutional blue.
Tullio Del Sette explained the symbolism behind the visual design: “The poster we presented this morning, which will accompany the 96th edition of the Italian Grand Prix — and the 75th since the foundation of the Formula One World Championship — is built around a vortex that chromatically celebrates the Italian tricolor.”
Within the swirling vortex are three stylized Formula 1 cars, representing the current era of the sport: a Ferrari, symbolizing national pride and heritage; a McLaren, which is currently dominating the championship; and a Mercedes featuring rising Italian star Andrea Kimi Antonelli, a driver backed by ACI Team Italia and viewed as the future of the nation’s motorsport hopes. Surrounding the vortex is a blue ribbon, echoing ACI’s official color. The ACI (Automobile Club d’Italia) is the national governing body for motorsport in Italy, affiliated with the Italian Olympic Committee (CONI), and a co-founder of the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA). The organization is once again responsible for organizing this prestigious Grand Prix in 2025.
During the same conference, which was broadcast live on ACI Sport, Geronimo La Russa gave his first remarks as the newly elected ACI president. He emphasized the symbolic and strategic value of Monza for Formula 1 and for Italy as a whole, stating: “Monza is home for me. But more importantly, it is the home of Formula 1, of passionate fans, and of the pinnacle of racing technology. Its enduring presence in the world championship highlights the importance of the tireless efforts made by everyone involved in organizing an event that brings immense benefits to the region and the entire country. As ACI, we will continue to work tirelessly to enhance this experience and to ensure it remains central within the national and international sporting calendar.”
