Debate continues over the lack of a penalty for Max Verstappen in his duel with Lando Norris during the closing stages of the United States Grand Prix, and now the drivers want answers and are asking the FIA for explanations. At Friday’s briefing in Mexico, the criteria for issuing or withholding penalties in certain cases will definitely be a topic of discussion.
During Mexico’s media day, some drivers commented on the decision made by the FIA stewards in the United States. Drivers feel there is a lack of clarity in the decision-making process and that it’s not always clear what these decisions are based on.
Lewis Hamilton was the first to raise the issue. “It’s always been a gray area. They probably need to make some changes, for sure. Moreover, we have inconsistencies in decisions depending on which stewards are present. As a sport, we need to level out all aspects.” – the future Ferrari driver pointed out.
Penalty or no penalty for Max Verstappen: Drivers’ opinions
George Russell, Lewis Hamilton’s teammate, also addressed the issue and demanded urgent explanations. The Briton expressed his interest in knowing how the FIA now assesses the incident, and whether Verstappen was completely justified or if there are details that need closer examination.
“I don’t think it’s possible to write a set of regulations covering every possible scenario; it’s a very fine line. I’m really interested to see if, after reviewing everything, the FIA believes Max should have been penalized or not for what he did. In my opinion, he should have been penalized. Now it’s only fair they explain,” George Russell added ahead of the Mexican Grand Prix.
Carlos Sainz also joined the Mercedes drivers in voicing his concerns. “We need clarification because in that case, both could be right. Max for going wide and Lando for gaining a position off-track. That’s why that specific scenario is very difficult to judge.” – the Spaniard explained.
The solution? According to the Ferrari driver, one option could be modifying the track. All of this needs to be clarified with the FIA as quickly as possible.
