According to German automobile magazine ‘Auto Motor und Sport’, the Formula 1 team principals want to do a strategy meeting after the Portugal Grand Prix. It is about the question of what the engine of the future should look like and whether the new concept can be introduced much earlier than 2026.
There are two options on the table in regards to a new engine concept:
1) A completely new technology that is geared to the needs of series development and attracts new manufacturers to the sport. But this has the risk of ending up with a technology monster again.
2) A much simpler power unit concept, which could be introduced together with the E-Fuels as early as 2023. It could be based on the current V6 turbo with a standard KERS. With an MGU-K, the word hybrid would also remain in the name.
The engine development restrictions have saved Ferrari, Honda, Mercedes and Renault $25 million each. But there are already talks about a complete freeze on engine development until the new engine regulations are introduced. A complete engine freeze can only happen, if all engines are performance wise to some extent equal. Ferrari’s deficit is too big at the moment. It is already being considered whether to allow Ferrari an additional development step, should the next PU not close the gap.
