Formula 1 still has its hands full with the 2021 calendar, but is at the same time focusing on the schedule for next year, as a first draft of the 2022 Formula 1 calendar will be presented in about two weeks. For the moment we have the confirmation that the German Grand Prix will not return on the Formula 1 calendar next year, as admitted by Italian manager and the current CEO of Formula One Group Stefano Domenicali, in a recent interview for German weekly sports magazine Sport Bild.
The German Grand Prix is a much loved event by many fans, but it is a race that has struggled to make ends meet financially in recent years. The Hockenheimring and the Nürburgring already alternated to spread the costs, and Mercedes was partner of the German GP for years. However the team stopped doing so and so the German GP disappeared from the calendar.
In 2020 the Nürburgring returned on the ‘corona calendar’ by hosting the Eifel Grand Prix. However, we don’t have to expect such a race in 2022. ” I have the feeling that the organisations themselves do not have the confidence that they can organise a race,” the Formula One CEO told the German media.
F1 has no shortage of new circuits though. There are also requests from Africa and races in the far east such as Korea. ”Just look at Zandvoort, that is already sold out for the coming years”, Domenicali said. In addition, the Miami GP will be on the calendar for the first time, where the CEO also expects full stands. According to former Ferrari boss Stefano Domenicali, the first draft of the 2022 Formula 1 calendar will consist of 23 races, of which one third will take place in Europe.
