Formula 1 is currently in the middle of its summer break, but the numbers after the first 14 races of the 2025 World Championship already tell the story of a season destined to be remembered. Leading the way is McLaren, with Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris firmly established as the two main protagonists in the battle for the drivers’ crown.
With a combined total of 11 race victories, the two drivers from Woking have carried the team to the very top of the Formula 1 hierarchy. Oscar Piastri leads the world championship with 284 points, which is an impressive 117 points more than he had at the same stage of the 2024 season. Close behind him is Lando Norris, who sits on 275 points, improving his tally by 76 points compared to the same point last year.
This extraordinary growth confirms the enormous step forward made by McLaren, which has now established itself as the leading force in Formula 1 and the clear favourite for both the drivers’ and constructors’ championships.
Verstappen struggles as Red Bull declines
The era of Red Bull’s dominance now feels distant. Max Verstappen has scored only 187 points so far, which is 90 fewer than he had at this stage in 2024. The Dutch triple world champion is paying the price for the inconsistent performance of the RB21, and as a result, the chance of fighting seriously for a fifth consecutive world title seems to be slipping away.
Ferrari: expectations not fully met
Compared to 2024, Charles Leclerc has suffered a slight drop in the championship standings. After 14 races, he has collected 151 points, 26 fewer than the 177 points he had at the same stage last season. This decline is relatively modest and reflects a Scuderia Ferrari that has been less effective than McLaren but still solid enough to remain in the upper part of the grid.
The situation is different for his new teammate Lewis Hamilton. In the 2025 season, the seven-time Formula 1 world champion has collected just 109 points, compared to the 150 he had the previous year. This marks a deficit of 41 points, highlighting his struggle to find the consistency required to fight at the very front.
Carlos Sainz, the disappointment of the season
The only driver with a worse balance than Max Verstappen is Carlos Sainz. After moving from Ferrari to Williams, the Spanish driver has scored just 16 points so far, compared to the 162 he had collected at the same point in 2024. This dramatic loss of 146 points makes him the driver with the biggest negative swing in performance compared to last season.
By contrast, his teammate Alexander Albon is enjoying one of the best seasons of his Formula 1 career. With 54 points, the Thai-British driver currently sits as the eighth-best performer in the drivers’ standings, helping Williams to consolidate its progress.
Young talents making their mark
Among the rookies of the season, Andrea Kimi Antonelli stands out with 64 points, while Isack Hadjar has collected 22 points and Liam Lawson has earned 20 points. All three have managed to make their presence felt in their first full year of Formula 1, underlining how the next generation is already leaving a strong impression.
Conclusion
The comparison with 2024 leaves little doubt: McLaren has made a historic leap forward, while Red Bull and Ferrari are struggling to keep up, and Williams is confirming its growth trajectory thanks to the strong performances of Alexander Albon. The second half of the season will decide whether it is Oscar Piastri or Lando Norris who can convert McLaren’s dominance into a world championship title.
