Mick Schumacher’s hopes of returning to F1 could materialize with Cadillac, although the team has two other names in the running.
For several years now, Mick Schumacher has hoped to return to F1, and Cadillac could represent a new chance. The son of the legendary seven-time world champion was left without a seat by Haas at the end of 2022, when he left the Ferrari Driver Academy then joined the Mercedes family.
Since then, Schumi Jr. has never missed an opportunity to get noticed by Formula 1 teams. However, without success. Teams have preferred younger drivers, and he has found some consolation in endurance racing, where he competes with Alpine.
Now a new opportunity arises with Cadillac’s entry as the eleventh Formula One team. According to F1.com, Mick Schumacher has made “a lot of pressure” to be considered by the American team as the first option. The site names Michael’s son as an ideal choice, although it warns that he is a “lower-ranked driver.”
Cadillac, in fact, would prefer someone more experienced to lead the team. The names of Sergio Pérez and Valtteri Bottas have emerged among the candidates. The list also includes Mick Schumacher, Zhou Guanyu, and Felipe Drugovich.
Mick raced with Haas in the 2021 and 2022 seasons, scoring 12 points in 44 races. His best result was sixth place at the 2022 Austrian Grand Prix.
Cadillac changes line-up?
Initially, Cadillac wanted to field an American driver on its team, paired with a more experienced one. Now this scenario seems less likely, considering the options on the table. The idea of choosing a veteran remains one of the main requirements, and Bottas and Pérez are still in contention.
The F1.com article mentions that Cadillac is in no hurry to announce its drivers, but nevertheless intends to sign at least one “before the end of the summer,” so that they can help with car development.
In the coming weeks, we will hear a lot about Cadillac, as talks between the team and drivers “will intensify in the coming weeks, as they focus on their line-up,” F1.com concludes.
