Former Ferrari head of simulator work to join Mercedes as deputy chief designer

The Italian put on “mothballs” in Maranello one year ago, will be operating at the Brackley team from 1 July, in the role of deputy chief designer. Giacomo was wanted by James Allison, lengthening the list of engineers who leave from the Maranello team.

One year has passed since Giacomo Tortora was removed from office as head of the Ferrari simulator. After the Monaco GP, the Cavallino engineer had been placed in the “freezer” of the Racing Department where he remained without assignments until he decided to leave and return to Great Britain.

From 1 July the Italian technician will be in Brackley to start a new professional adventure in the prestigious role of deputy chief designer. In short, he joins the world champion team from the front door, extending the list of engineers who leave Maranello and move on to the three-pointed star.

Tortora was wanted by James Allison, technical director in the staff of Toto Wolff: the Englishman had had the opportunity to appreciate Giacomo during their time with Ferrari and James had tried to convince the Italian who completed eight years with Ferrari, where he came from McLaren as a result of Pat Fry’s interest in him.

Giacomo Tortora is yet another Ferrari engineer who will come out of the Sports Management after receiving an offer from Mercedes. After eight years spent in Maranello, the technician who had become head of the simulator work found a new place in which he will have an important recognition with a promotion in role, becoming one of the main engineers of John Owen, the chief designer.

Tortora lengthens the list of those who left Maranello and went to Brackley: it started with Aldo Costa and then it was the turn of James Allison and the motorist Lorenzo Sassi. Apparently the road that led some technicians who fell out of favor to Ferrari towards the silver arrows works, while there does not seem to be a reverse path.
