Speculation surrounding Max Verstappen’s long-term Formula 1 future continues to intensify, and one former driver now believes the Dutch champion could eventually end up at Ferrari after extending his stay with Red Bull for a little longer.
Despite being strongly linked with Mercedes in recent months, Max Verstappen’s name continues to generate endless transfer rumours across the Formula 1 paddock. Questions about the future competitiveness of Red Bull, the upcoming engine regulations and the overall direction of Formula 1 have only increased uncertainty around the four-time world champion’s future plans.
Now, former Formula 1 driver Christijan Albers has outlined what he believes would be the ideal career path for his fellow Dutchman — and it includes a potential future with Ferrari.
Christijan Albers sees Ferrari as Max Verstappen’s ultimate challenge
Speaking during an appearance on the Telegraaf podcast, Christijan Albers reportedly explained that he had personally encouraged Max Verstappen not to consider leaving Formula 1 too early, despite the Red Bull driver’s growing frustration with the sport’s future direction.
During the Canadian Grand Prix weekend, Max Verstappen once again raised concerns about the upcoming Formula 1 regulations, particularly regarding the future balance between electric deployment and the internal combustion engine. The Dutch driver has repeatedly suggested that excessive energy management risks moving Formula 1 away from its traditional racing identity.
Those comments have fuelled rumours about a possible shock retirement in the coming years, especially if the future regulations fail to match Max Verstappen’s vision for the sport.
However, Christijan Albers reportedly believes the Dutchman should continue racing and remain with Red Bull in the short term before eventually pursuing what he considers the ultimate Formula 1 challenge: driving for Ferrari.
According to the former Minardi driver, Max Verstappen could stay at Red Bull for another season before reassessing the market once the new Formula 1 era becomes clearer.
Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc central to Ferrari future questions
Any hypothetical Ferrari move for Max Verstappen would naturally create enormous questions around the futures of Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc.
Ferrari currently possesses one of the strongest driver pairings on the Formula 1 grid, with Lewis Hamilton bringing unmatched experience and global influence while Charles Leclerc remains deeply connected to Ferrari’s long-term project.
Still, Formula 1 history has repeatedly shown that Ferrari is always linked with the biggest names in the sport whenever major driver market opportunities emerge.
Christijan Albers reportedly suggested that replacing either Lewis Hamilton or Charles Leclerc with Max Verstappen could eventually become a realistic possibility if timing and circumstances aligned correctly.
The Dutchman’s arrival at Ferrari would instantly become one of the biggest stories in modern Formula 1, potentially comparable to Lewis Hamilton’s own sensational move to Maranello.
Could Max Verstappen follow Michael Schumacher’s Ferrari path?
One of the most interesting aspects of Christijan Albers’ comments was the comparison with Michael Schumacher.
The former Formula 1 driver reportedly believes Max Verstappen already belongs among the greatest champions of the modern era, but suggested that succeeding with Ferrari could elevate his legacy even further.
Winning titles with Red Bull established Max Verstappen as one of the dominant figures of his generation. However, transforming Ferrari back into a championship-winning force would represent a completely different type of achievement — one capable of redefining how future generations remember his career.
That is precisely why Ferrari continues to hold such unique appeal for elite drivers. The pressure is enormous, the political environment is complex and expectations are unlike anything else in Formula 1. But success with the Scuderia often carries a level of historical significance impossible to replicate elsewhere.
Michael Schumacher achieved legendary status by rebuilding Ferrari into a dominant force in the early 2000s, and many inside Formula 1 still consider that one of the greatest driver-team partnerships in the sport’s history.
Christijan Albers reportedly believes Max Verstappen possesses the mentality and technical leadership required to potentially create a similar impact in Maranello one day.
Max Verstappen still holds the key to the Formula 1 driver market
For now, Max Verstappen remains under contract with Red Bull, and there is still no concrete indication that an exit is imminent. Nevertheless, the Dutch driver continues to sit at the centre of the Formula 1 driver market because any future decision involving him could trigger a massive chain reaction across multiple top teams.
Mercedes continues to be mentioned as a possible destination, while Aston Martin has also occasionally appeared in speculation because of Adrian Newey’s arrival and Honda’s future involvement.
Ferrari, meanwhile, remains more of a long-term fantasy scenario — but one that continues to capture the imagination of Formula 1 fans worldwide.
And in a sport where shocking transfers have increasingly become reality, few would completely rule out seeing Max Verstappen one day wearing Ferrari red alongside the names of Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc in Formula 1 history.
