Ferrari, Marc Surer criticizes Maranello team
Working for Ferrari is an honor, but it’s not for everyone. Fresh ideas are needed to help the Scuderia remain competitive in Formula 1, and above all, a strong backbone is required to withstand the pressure of a work environment that demands a lot from individuals. After all, the name to defend is one that has written indelible pages in the history of motorsport. The latest casualty of this pressure is Mattia Binotto, who was appreciated when he had a behind-the-scenes role, but as the team principal, he has occasionally shown weaknesses under pressure, particularly in communication.
According to Marc Surer, one of Ferrari’s problems goes beyond the track and is about the work culture. The result-oriented pressure that permeates Maranello does not contribute to putting the engineers at ease, especially the Italians, who see the Prancing Horse as a legend and refrain from raising objections out of fear of losing their jobs.
Marc Surer’s comments
“I know from people who were at Ferrari that everyone works with fear at Maranello, no one has anything to object because they are afraid of losing their jobs. Even enthusiastic and euphoric engineers are hindered by this fear,” said the former Swiss driver to the Germans at Formel1. “This particularly concerns the Italian staff, who are naturally honored to work for Ferrari and don’t want to jeopardize their positions.” – he pointed out.
“Fred Vasseur has nerves of steel and maybe he can steer the Ferrari ship in the right direction. But when he needs to strengthen the team, he has a problem: no one really wants to go to Italy. There are plenty of opportunities in England, so why would an engineer with a family move to Italy? In the days of Michael Schumacher, it was different because an entire group moved. But at the moment, I don’t see any driver who could come to Ferrari and bring half the team with them.” – the former Formula 1 driver concluded.
