Former F1 boss Bernie Ecclestone stopped at Portugal airport after shotgun found in luggage

Former Formula 1 boss Bernie Ecclestone has reportedly been stopped at Tires airport near Cascais, Portugal, after authorities found a firearm among his luggage. According to Portuguese newspaper Correio da Manhã, a routine inspection following the landing of his private jet resulted in the discovery of a smooth-bore shotgun in his possession.

The 95-year-old, one of the most influential figures in Formula 1 history, was stopped over an allegation of unlawfully carrying a firearm. It is not yet known what legal procedure will follow, including whether Ecclestone will be brought before a judge or released.

Bernie Ecclestone stopped at Tires airport in Portugal

The incident occurred at Tires airport, close to Cascais, where Ecclestone had arrived aboard his private aircraft. After the jet landed, authorities carried out a standard check and reportedly discovered the shotgun among his baggage.

The development has once again placed the former Formula 1 chief executive in the headlines years after he stepped away from running the championship. Ecclestone played a central role in shaping modern F1 and remains closely associated with the sport’s commercial expansion, having spent decades at the centre of its business and political landscape. His influence on Formula 1 extended to decisions over where races would be held, including occasions when Ecclestone personally negotiated potential new Grand Prix venues.

Previous firearm incident involving Ecclestone in Brazil

This is not the first time Bernie Ecclestone has faced a similar situation at an airport. Four years ago, the former F1 boss was stopped in Brazil after a handgun was discovered in his luggage.

On that occasion, Ecclestone acknowledged that he owned the weapon but maintained that it had ended up in his suitcase without his knowledge. He was subsequently released on bail.

The latest case in Portugal therefore bears a clear resemblance to that earlier episode, although the next legal steps in the current matter have yet to be established.

Ecclestone divides his time between Portugal and Switzerland

Ecclestone owns a Dassault Falcon 7X private jet, valued at around €40 million. Now aged 95, he currently spends much of his time between Switzerland and Portugal.

He also owns a residence in Brazil, where the family of his wife, Fabiana Flosi, lives. The country has remained an important part of Ecclestone’s personal life alongside his European residences.

Although he is no longer responsible for running Formula 1, Ecclestone remains one of the championship’s most recognisable former executives. His departure marked a major change in the way the sport was managed, with the commercial and global development of Formula 1 continuing to evolve in the years since his leadership.

For now, attention will centre on how the Portuguese authorities handle the case and whether Ecclestone will be required to appear before a judge following the reported discovery at Tires airport.
