After official statements, the FIA revisits the issue of flexible wings on McLaren and Mercedes and clarifies: “F1 regulation changes only in 2025.”
The FIA has returned to the topic of McLaren and Mercedes’ flexible wings, but F1 regulations will remain unchanged until 2025. Following the controversy at Monza, it’s clear that there is some validity to the complaints from Ferrari and Red Bull. However, the concept of a “flexible wing” is complex to analyze and regulate. The International Federation emphasized that all teams are currently in compliance with the technical regulations.
Amending technical regulations is always a delicate matter, especially mid-season. While history sometimes shows inconsistency, with technical directives capable of overturning entire championships, it is important to remember that forcing teams to modify their designs mid-season is not a good practice.
This seems to be the message from Nikolas Tombazis, current FIA single-seater director, who explained the reasoning behind delaying action on the flexible wings issue: “[Regulation changes] would not only impact the car’s aerodynamics – he stated to *Auto Motor und Sport* – but also the structure of the parts themselves.”
“Even if we were to announce a new regulation now, the teams wouldn’t be ready before Abu Dhabi,” Nikolas Tombazis continued, making it clear: “The FIA will not take any action before 2025, if necessary.” – the FIA single-seater director added,
The concerns expressed by Red Bull and Ferrari remain. Red Bull, in particular, has repeatedly hinted at accusations against McLaren, which were later made explicit by Helmut Marko after the qualifying session for the Italian Grand Prix at Monza. On the other hand, Frédéric Vasseur was more reserved, not directly accusing the Woking team after the race, but implying that discussions with the FIA are ongoing.
