Fred Vasseur has received support from rival Formula 1 team bosses as scrutiny over his position at Ferrari continues to intensify following the Scuderia’s recent dip in form. Flavio Briatore and James Vowles have both argued that the Ferrari team principal is subjected to a particularly extreme level of judgement compared with many of his counterparts elsewhere on the grid.
The pressure has grown during a difficult sequence for Ferrari. Lewis Hamilton’s third-place finish at the Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia ended a run of six races without a podium, but speculation surrounding Vasseur’s future has continued despite that result.
Flavio Briatore says Ferrari scrutiny is especially intense
Flavio Briatore believes the level of media attention surrounding Vasseur is significantly harsher than that faced by most other Formula 1 team principals. The Alpine boss argued that coverage becomes far more aggressive as soon as results begin to deteriorate, with every failure attracting detailed examination.
Briatore acknowledged that this is part of Formula 1 and that teams ultimately depend on media attention because it forms part of the sport’s business. However, he suggested that Vasseur faces an especially difficult situation because the volume of coverage around Ferrari is so high.
The Italian manager is familiar with intense scrutiny himself, having been heavily criticised during the aftermath of the 2008 Crashgate scandal while he was in charge of Renault. In his view, the attention surrounding Ferrari magnifies both success and failure to a level that is difficult to match elsewhere.
Ferrari leadership has publicly backed Fred Vasseur
The latest support arrives after speculation around Vasseur intensified further. Christian Horner recently described the Ferrari team principal position as a dream job, while Italian media reports have suggested friction between the French manager and Ferrari CEO Benedetto Vigna over the integration of Lewis Hamilton into the wider organisation.
Ferrari’s senior leadership responded by publicly reaffirming its confidence in Vasseur. Executive chairman John Elkann and Benedetto Vigna backed the team principal during an emergency press briefing communicated through chief communications officer Maria Conti.
Vasseur also maintained that he remains in daily contact with both senior executives and rejected suggestions that his autonomy within Ferrari has been restricted. The issue has become one of the central talking points around Maranello, with Ferrari again publicly backing Fred Vasseur as questions continue over the team’s direction.
James Vowles believes criticism of Fred Vasseur is exaggerated
James Vowles offered a similar assessment of the pressure surrounding the Ferrari role. The Williams team principal acknowledged that every Formula 1 team boss works with the understanding that poor results can put their position at risk, but he believes the reaction at Ferrari operates on a more extreme scale.
According to Vowles, the difference lies in how success and failure are treated at Maranello. He suggested that Ferrari team principals experience higher highs when results are strong and considerably lower lows when performance declines.
From his external perspective, the criticism directed at Vasseur appears exaggerated compared with the scrutiny faced by many other figures in similar positions. He also suggested that the same pattern has affected previous Ferrari team principals, underlining how uniquely demanding the role can become when expectations are not met.
The comments from Flavio Briatore and James Vowles therefore provide the French manager with notable support at a time when his position remains under intense public attention. Ferrari has already attempted to close down speculation internally, while the French manager has continued to insist that his relationship with the company’s senior leadership remains active and unrestricted.
With the Maranello team trying to recover its competitive form, the focus will inevitably remain on results. For now, however, two experienced figures from rival teams have made clear that they believe the level of scrutiny surrounding the Ferrari team principal goes beyond what most of the Formula 1 grid experiences. The wider context around his position can also be followed through the latest updates on Fred Vasseur’s Ferrari future.
